What is Regumate used for?

Regu-mate (altrenogest) is a synthetic hormone used to suppress the behavioral signs of heat (also called oestrusoestrusEstrous cycles start after sexual maturity in females and are interrupted by anestrous phases, otherwise known as “rest” phases, or by pregnancies. Typically, estrous cycles repeat until death. These cycles are widely variable in duration and frequency depending on the species.

What is Regumate used for in horses?

REGU-MATE (altrenogest) Solution 0.22% is indicated to suppress estrus in mares. Suppression of estrus allows for a predictable occurrence of estrus following drug withdrawal. This facilitates the attainment of regular cyclicity during the transition from winter anestrus to the physiological breeding season.

Is Regumate good for horses?

This helpful hormone therapy can help increase your horse-breeding success. Regumate is the trade name for a synthetic hormone called altrenogest. It is the only such medication proven to have progesterone-type biologic activity in the horse.

What are the side effects of Regumate in horses?

Repeated contact with the product may lead to negative effects on the female reproductive system, such as disruption of the menstrual cycle, uterine or abdominal cramping, and prolongation of pregnancy. It may also potentially cause loss of libido in men.

How long can you keep a mare on Regumate?

Regu-Mate® (altrenogest) is a form of progesterone that can help you reliably mange your mare’s estrous cycle. When given daily for up to 15 consecutive days, Regu-Mate reliably keeps mares from entering estrus. [1] When use of Regu-Mate is discontinued, mares will come into heat within 4 to 5 days.

Can Regu-Mate make mares worse?

In some mares Regumate can even worsen their behaviour, becoming more irritable, touchy and even overly aggressive.

Does my mare need Regu-Mate?

Behavioural problems may well recur following cessation of treatment. Administering Regu-mate to your performance mare should not jeopardize her potential as a brood mare. It is not absolutely necessary to have your mare on Regu-mate for the entire year or even throughout your competitive calendar.

What happens if a female touches Regumate?

Acute effects after single exposure are possible; however, continued daily exposure has a greater potential for these effects. Acute effects include disruption of the menstrual cycle, uterine or abdominal cramping, increased or decreased uterine bleeding and headaches.

Does Regumate stop seasons?

The use of a synthetic hormone is often used to aid diagnosis in cases where it is unclear whether or not the behaviour is a symptom of the mare being in oestrous. Regumate™, a synthetic progesterone, has the effect of stopping a mare from coming into season.

When should I start Regumate?

All indications suggest that the time when the pregnancy is most at risk is during the early embryonic stage – from shortly after ovulation until 20-30 days after that ovulation. The recommended protocol for treatment with altrenogest is to commence treatment about 3½ days after ovulation has been detected.
