Is there a limit to safe downhill speed on a bike

6 min read

Asked by: Lisa Johnson

There is no limit to safe downhill speed on your bike. The limit is when you come off your bike. In which case even a low speed crash of 20 to 30 mph can be pretty nasty on chip and seal type surfaces or where there are obstacles (oncoming traffic anyone?).

How fast can you ride a bike downhill?

Technically speaking, bikes can go downhill at extremely high speeds, provided that all the conditions and factors are in their favor. For example, on the downhill parts of most regular situations, the speed of the bikes will peak at about 17 to 30 mph (27.3 to 48.2 km/h).

Professional cyclists can achieve a 45-MPH top speed on a bike using only raw power to propel themselves over the road, facing the wind. Todd Reichert is the world record-holder for unpaced bikes or bicycles that rely only on leg power, setting a top speed of 82.82 MPH. Competitive cyclists are a different breed.

How fast do Tour de France riders go uphill?

Based on my research, it seems that most climbs are done at around 12-14mph–and we’re talking about some serious gradients and after several hours in the saddle for days on end. Of course, many of us could probably climb pretty well with all those hours put in.

What is a fast average cycling speed?

Ride consistently and get fitter, and you should be able to maintain a mileage per hour in the mid-teens (around 15.5mph/25kph) over several hours – Strava reckons that’s the average speed for rides logged. To hit an average speed of 20mph/32kph, you’ll probably have had to put in lots of systematic training.

Should you pedal downhill?

The energy you put into pedaling downhill is largely lost to air resistance, so there’s no real point in doing so unless you’re racing. But, that said, maintaining an easy, slow cadence downhill, where you’re not actually exerting much energy, may help keep your legs warm and ready to go at the bottom.
