Asked by: Terry Wise

A urethane finish is a protective layer that covers the floor, like a raincoat. Consumers often ask which type of finish is more durable, urethane or oil, but there is no simple answer to that question.

How long does urethane coating last?

Brands such as General Finishes recommend that you wait the full 21 days after applying the final coat of the water-based topcoats before active use.

Is urethane shiny?

Flat or matte polyurethane leaves the least shiny coating and conveys the look of natural, unfinished wood. Satin polyurethane has a low to medium sheen that helps conceal dirt and scratches, making it popular for flooring. Semi-gloss polyurethane and gloss polyurethane have a higher level of sheen and reflectivity.

Is urethane a wood?

Projects. Just like with wood stain there are two main types of polyurethane. There's water-based polyurethane. And oil-based polyurethane. They are available in different sheens. Including semi-gloss

Is urethane water or oil based?

oil based polyurethane will take about two to three times longer to dry between coats compared to faster-drying water based polyurethane. The water in water based polyurethane tends to “react with the grain” more, so you often need to apply more coats to achieve a smooth, finish.

What is the difference between urethane and polyurethane?

One of the main differences between urethane versus polyurethane is that urethane is soft and malleable, and polyurethane is rigid and firm. To put it simply, urethane is a chemical group, and polyurethane incorporates many urethane groups.

What is the most popular finish for hardwood floors?

SATIN FLOOR FINISH

The satin sheen is the most popular finish for hardwood floors. This hardwood floor sheen has about 40% luster and is easy to keep clean. This level of sheen disperses light and doesn’t show all of the imperfections or dirt.

What is the most durable wood finish?

Oil-based polyurethane is the most durable finish you can apply by hand, and catalyzed lacquer and varnish are the most durable sprayed finishes.

What is the toughest finish for hardwood floors?

Polyurethane is actually the most durable hardwood floor finish.

What is better polyurethane or lacquer?

Despite being available in variances, polyurethane is more durable. It is thick and leaves a strong coating. Lacquer is thin and penetrates the wood surface. It is also durable but susceptible to scratches and discoloration after some time.

Is varnish and urethane the same?

Unlike polyurethane, varnish is designed for outdoor projects and is not typically used for indoor surfaces such as a hardwood floor. While polyurethane is water- or oil-based plastic resin, varnish is older and made from resins, oils, and solvents.

Is urethane and lacquer the same?

The difference between polyurethane and lacquer is that Polyurethane is a thicker and more durable sealant that takes longer to dry. Lacquer is a thin and quick-drying finish that penetrates into the wood but it can also chip and crack easily. In short, polyurethane is a curing finish while lacquer is a drying finish.

Does polyurethane turn yellow?

Oil based polyurethanes turn the floors yellow…and over time, they become more yellow…and sometimes even a bit orangish. It’s the UV rays from the sun that turn them a darker yellow or amber and the more they are exposed over time, the yellower they get.

Is there a non-yellowing polyurethane?

The Best Non-Yellowing Water-Based Polyurethane

The best non-yellowing clear coat is Minwax’s Polycrylic. It’s easy to use, dries within a few hours, can be applied multiple times within 24 hours, dries completely clear, and doesn’t yellow over time.

Does polyurethane make wood waterproof?

Polyurethane, varnish, and lacquer are tried-and-true sealants with excellent waterproofing properties. They’re either brushed or sprayed onto clean, sanded wood and then allowed to dry completely, prior to the piece being lightly re-sanded and recoated.

What finish does not yellow?

Acrylic based finishes, both water and solvent based are the best choice for non-yellowing finishes. Waxes also will not yellow as well as some catalyzed lacquers and varnishes.

Does urethane paint yellow?

polyurethane will not yellow with time, no matter if the material is water or oil based. In the course of aging, oils-based finishes will turn yellow and appear more amber. Currently, you could paint over the polyurethane with primer and white paint or remove the finish.

Why did my clear polyurethane turn yellow?

Overall, polyurethane turning yellow is common and more common with oil-based polyurethane. The yellowing is due to polymer degradation, UV exposure, or oily deposits. However, you can lighten the yellowing by scuffing the polyurethane finish with a fine-grit sandpaper. This will remove some of the yellowing.

How do you keep polyurethane from turning yellow?

Preventing Polyurethane from Turning Yellow

Apply polyurethane in thin layers. While this won’t directly prevent the polyurethane from going yellow, it will cause the yellowness to be much less and make it easier to sand the polyurethane off for a re-coat if required. Use water-based polyurethane.

Which is better polycrylic or polyurethane?

The formula has an acrylic base; polyurethane is added for better adhesion and durability. Polycrylic is not as durable as polyurethane and is meant to be used only on interior surfaces such as cabinets, furniture, and trim.

Does polyurethane make wood darker?

Oil-based polyurethane will likely give the stained wood a yellow, orange, or brown tint, sometimes making it appear darker. Water-based polyurethane will not affect the color of the stained wood, though the shine of the polyurethane can sometimes cause the stain to appear brighter.

Should I put polyurethane over stain?

Never apply polyurethane over tacky stain. Otherwise, both stain and polyurethane layers will be destroyed. You should wait till the stain is completely dried over and then apply the polyurethane finish. If the stain doesn’t dry, wipe the excess stain, and let it dry completely before applying polyurethane.

Is 2 coats of polyurethane enough?

2 coats of polyurethane are enough to protect the wood from moisture and contaminants. However, for added protection against water damage, about three or four coats of polyurethane would suffice.
