What does a needle bearing do?

1 min read

Asked by: Paige Oliver

Needle bearings are a small cylindrical type of roller bearings which are used to prevent friction between moving surfaces which have low rotational speeds. Needle roller bearings are usually used when space is at a premium as needle bearings are much more compact than ball bearings.

Are needle bearings better than ball bearings?

A needle roller bearing is thus able to withstand 2 to 8 times more load than ball bearings or cylindrical roller bearings of the same shaft diameter, all this in a small space.

What is an advantage of needle roller bearings?

A main advantage of needle roller bearings is their ability to use mating surfaces as inner or outer raceways, or both. Bearing load ratings typically are based on raceway hardness of 58 Rc or equivalent. If it is lower, the capacity of the bearing-raceway combination is reduced.

What is the difference between a roller bearing and a needle bearing?

The difference between a needle roller bearing and roller bearing is the ratio of diameter and length of their rollers, when the ratio of the diameter and the length of roller of a roller bearing is between the interval of 0.1 to 0.4, that roller bearing is called a needle roller bearing.
