What are electrical screws?

Electrical screws (also known as switch box screws) secure faceplates to switches and sockets, and are invaluable when re-installing sockets during home improvement projects. They feature a fully-threaded short shank that offers a good fit with back boxes.

What size is an electrical screw?

All modern sockets have standard size M3. 5 (3.5mm) diameter screws. The lengths can differ, so measure one that you haven’t lost just to be sure. If you’ve lost them both, unscrew one from another nearby socket or switch.

What are outlet screws called?

Receptacle screws are used to fasten outlet boxes or other receptacles to existing construction. Long screws are useful when mounting switch covers to thick surfaces, such as those with paneling.

Screws have three basic measurements: gauge, threads per inch, and shaft length in inches. So, you may also see a measurement like 6-32 x 1 1/2″. This means it’s a #6 diameter, with 32 threads per inch (almost double the normal thread count as a standard wood screw) and an inch and a half long.
