Are all Shimano brake hoses the same?

Brake hoses – Shimano essentially use two hose designs. They both have the same external diameter, but the internal on the higher end hose is narrower. As the surrounding material is steel-reinforced, this makes the hose stiffer on the narrower hose. The cheaper hose is code BH59, and the stiffer hose is BH90.

What size is Shimano brake hose?

Are Shimano and SRAM brake hoses the same?

No. Interface between the caliper and lines are different. Shimano and SRAM brakes are not interchangeable. Shimano brake lines are designed for mineral oil not dot fluid.

Are tektro and Shimano brake hoses interchangeable?

Can I use BH59 instead of BH90?

The BH59 and BH90 Olives are identical, the barbs however are different, because of the different internal diameter of the tubing. They are not interchangeable.

Can you mix BH59 and BH90?

New Ultegra also uses the BH90 hose. The RS685 lever / RS805 calliper sets came with BH59 in the box. You can use BH90 with your combination but it gives a more on / off feel with shorter lever travel.

Most importantly, YOU CANNOT mix Shimano and SRAM hydraulic brake parts. It’s more than a performance issue — it’s a safety issue. Shimano brakes employ mineral oil as hydraulic fluid, whereas SRAM uses DOT brake fluid. Those are incompatible — one is insoluble in water, and the other is water soluble.

The newest iteration of Shimano brakes come with the hose unattached to the brake lever. With previous models, you could install the brake and run them with the excess brake hose, then cut them to fit at your convenience.

How can I tell which Shimano brakes I have?

The inside of the brake caliper (on the other side of the Shimano label) is a model number. Also on the bottom of the brake lever there should also be a model number.
