What happens if your chain is too short?

If the chain is too short, this shift is difficult to make and the derailleur cage is stretched out and almost parallel to the chainstay. If the chain is really short, then you might not even be able to shift into the largest cog.

What happens if a chain is too long?

A chain that’s too long (loose) may cause dropped chains and/or inconsistent shifting — front and back shifting. A chain that’s too short (tight) can cause even bigger problems. Hopefully the bike just won’t shift into the largest cog or to the big ring …

What causes chain skipping?

Gear indexing issues

One of the most common reasons for a skipping chain is simply a drivetrain that needs a simple indexing adjustment. This is so common that even many brand new bikes can exhibit these symptoms. The good news is that this is probably the simplest to diagnose and fix of all potential issues.

Is it OK to shorten a chain?

If you need to shorten your chain simply because it is too long as a result of having too many links, then reducing your chain is a perfectly good idea, and is safe to do. However, if you’re shortening your chain because it has stretched due to wear and use over time, the chain should not be shortened.

Should the thicker chain be longer or shorter?

Why is chain length important?

The importance of determining the correct chain length

Too long chain will increase risk of chain dropping, while too short chain puts too much stress on the drivetrain, or can damage it, if it can be put and closed over the chainrings in the first place. Chain that is too short can also damage rear derailleur.

Why are longer chains stronger?

As well as the arrangement of molecules, the properties of a polymer are also determined by the length of the molecular chain. In a nutshell, longer equals stronger. This is because, as a molecule gets longer, the total binding forces between molecules are greater, making the polymer chain stronger.

Is a tighter chain better?

The chain should be tight enough that it only allows you to move it up and down about half an inch. If there is no slack in the chain then it is too tight. And if there is too much slack then you need to tighten that chain.

How do you adjust a chain if it is found to short?

Can I lengthen a chain?

If you have a chain that you love that could do with being a little longer, the answer is to buy an extension or extender chain. This is a short length of chain, often between 4cm and 8cm, which can be attached to any existing chain via a jump ring. This then increases the overall measurement giving you more options.

Does height affect chain length?

Consider your height.

Most necklace lengths flatter taller frames (5’7″ or 170 cm and higher) as well, but long chains can look especially flattering since they accentuate height. While someone with a tall frame can definitely pull off a short chain, keep in mind that this style may not stand out as much as you’d like.
