Are all bike stems the same size?

The length of a stem is one of the most important factors to consider if you are looking to change the stock option on your bike. Mountain bike stems are typically around 50-80mm long, while road bike stems are longer, starting at around 80mm and extending to 120mm or longer as the frame size increases.

Do you need a spacer above stem?

How tight should a MTB stem be?

A god rule of thumb is to tighten your headset cap bolt until it is causing some friction with steering and then back it off until it’s tight enough to keep the stack neatly in place. This is typically 1/8th to 1/4 of turn. Give your headset spacers a twist. You should not be able to move them much, if at all.

How do you get the plastic cap off a bike stem?

Use a flathead screwdriver, or something thin to get underneath it and pry it off. I have a rockrider 540. That’s just a rubber cap like it’s been said. You can take it off with your finger easily.

Tighten each bolt a few turns, following the pattern at right. Continue tightening until you reach 75 inch/pounds (8.5nm). This is approximately as tight as you can get the bars using a multi-tool. Maintaining equal load on all 4 bolts is critical for durability.

Should you grease quill stem?

Unless you want want of those circus bikes where your wheel goes in a different direction to the handlebars. A quill stem going in a steel steerer should be greased a little though. Simple rule: Grease anything where metal comes into contact with metal.
