Which way should plates face on barbell?

One of the first things you learn when starting to work out is to put plates on the barbell with the flat part facing out. A trainer or maybe a more experienced friend explains this unwritten rule, and from that point forward you put the plates on that way.

Why should weight plates face inward?

To my knowledge there actually is a reason. If the weights are unclipped then by facing them in you get more surface to surface contact and this helps hold the weights in place because of the texturing on the plates.

Does it matter how you load barbell?


So load it with a smooth side. So that everybody can see what you're lifting. That's the wrong way the first plate you always want the numbers. That way as we load more plates.

Which way do I put the weight plates on?

The rim the rim is there for your fingers. Now this doesn't matter for something like a 2.5. Because it's not heavy okay.

Does the order of plates matter?

Depending on the bar, total weight and the exact order of the plates it certainly CAN make a difference – but in the scenario described above I wouldn’t worry overly much about it. For “heavy” efforts I do try to load plates in the “correct” order for the sake of consistency, mind.
