Is there a Campagnolo / Shimano compatibility issue for friction shift systems?

4 min read

Asked by: Richard Pacino

In general, no. Campy, Shimano, and Suntour (and other) friction shift systems are compatible because where the chain lands is up to you. There are some caveats that you’ll have to resolve with trial and error. In particular some rear derailleurs have “longer reach” than others.

Will Campagnolo shifters work with Shimano derailleurs?

We’ve used Ergopower with Shimano front derailleurs with success, but a Campagnolo front with Ergopower shifters is ideal. You’ll need a 9-speed Shimano-compatible cassette to complete the package, which can also save weight over 10-speed cassettes.

Can I use any derailleur with friction shifters?

Any derailleur will work with a friction shifter.

Can you use any shifter with any derailleur?

No, different maker or different model with different number of “speed” shifters have different pull ratio (i.e. the length of cable pulled by a single shift). Usually it’s safe to use different model with same number of gears from the same maker.

What is Shimano pull ratio?

Cable pull * Derailleur shift ratio = Cog pitch

Cable Pull Derailleur Ratio
Shimano 9 2.5 1.7
Shimano 10 Road 2.3 1.7
Shimano 10 Mountain 3.4 1.2
Shimano 11 Road 2.7 1.4*

Will Shimano 11-speed cassette work with Campagnolo?

In other words, Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo 11-speed cassettes work just fine on each others’ drivetrains. So, one way to use an old 10-speed wheel with an 11-speed drivetrain is to install a Campagnolo freehub body and Campagnolo 11-speed cassette on it.

Can you fit an 11-speed cassette on a 10 speed hub?

No, 11speed mountain cassettes are slightly wider than 10/9/8 speed ones, so newer Shimano free hubs come with a small spacer (only 1 or 2 mm) so they’re still compatible with older drive trains.

Can you mix and match shifter and derailleur?

As a general rule of thumb, it’s best not to mix and match drivetrain components from different brands. While things such as cranks, chains and cassettes are mostly inter-compatible between brands, generally speaking, shifters and derailleurs aren’t.

Are all Shimano shifters compatible?

Shimano shifters, whether for 6, 7, 8, or 9 speeds are compatible with all the Shimano RDs for 6 to 9 speeds, and with Shimano 10 speed road RDs (not with 10 speed MTB RDs). Update: a new exception are Shimano Tiagra 4700 road 10-speed shifters, and Shimano GRX gravel series shifters.

Which is better Tourney TX or TZ?

Tourney components come in model variants of Tourney TZ and Tourney TX. Tourney TX is slightly better than TZ in shifting quality and smoothness. Your choice of speeds is either 7 or 8 with a triple crankset.

Can I put a Shimano cassette on a Campagnolo hub?

If you have a Campagnolo cassette, you require a Campagnolo freehub, they are not compatible with Shimano or Sram.

Can I use Campagnolo groupset with Shimano cassette?

Yes. Campagnolo wheels are compatible with both Shimano and SRAM components. In order to use Campagnolo wheels with any drivetrain on the market, Campagnolo produces two kinds of freewheel bodies: one specific for Campagnolo drivetrains (from 9 to 11 speeds) and one for non-Campagnolo drivetrains (from 9 to 11 speeds).

Is a Shimano cassette compatible with Campagnolo derailleur?

For example, a Campagnolo cassette will not fit on a wheel that is designed for Shimano/SRAM cassettes. Ten speed Campagnolo cassettes do not work well with Shimano or SRAM 10 speed shifters and derailleurs as the spacing between cogs on Campagnolo cassettes has also been different.

Is box compatible with Shimano?

Like the shifter, Box’s One rear derailleur is compatible with Box and Shimano shifters. To keep the chain from slapping around, Box employs a damper called CamClutch. The clutch resides in a carbon fiber/nylon composite body and handles business with a one-way friction plate.

Is all Shimano 10 speed compatible?

All Shimano and SRAM cassettes up to 10 speed are broadly compatible. They all use Shimano’s Hyperglide II freehub body spline pattern. Cassettes with the same number of sprockets have the same sprocket spacing, sprocket width and overall width.

What cassette are compatible with Campagnolo?

Campagnolo freehubs are compatible only with Campagnolo cassettes. In late 2000, Campagnolo introduced the Ultra-Drive standard, for greater shifting smoothness. Its 9/10/11-speed freehubs are compatible with all the Ultra-Drive cassettes of either 9, 10, 11 or 12-speed (11t starting cog) with no spacers required.

Will a Shimano cassette work with Campagnolo freehub?

The latter explains why a Shimano or SRAM cassette cannot be fitted to a wheel with a Campagnolo freehub body (and vice versa, save for Edco’s unique freehub body design, which will accommodate both).
