Identify aero handlebars that are easy to work with?

Asked by: Charles Raju

How do I choose aero handlebars?

The rule of thumb when selecting the correct handlebar width is to measure the distance between the two bony bits on your shoulders – in more scientific terms the distance between your two acromioclavicular (AC) joints. This measurement gives you a baseline – if it’s 38cm, look for 38cm bars – and so on.

Are aero handlebars more comfortable?

The primary reason why aerobars are popular with ultra-distance cyclists is often not the aerodynamic gains (which are significant), but it is the extra comfort that they offer by taking the weight off of the hands and instead using the skeleton to support the weight of the upper body through the elbows.

How effective are aero handlebars?

Reduced Frontal Area = Reduced Drag

So if you’re starting with a standard road bike, you have a lot of room for improvement by riding in an aero position using clip on aero bars. After installing aero bars, riders typically find that they’re going 1 to 2 mph faster at the same level of effort.

Which handlebar is best for cycle?

Bullhorn bars are most often used on time-trial and one-speed city bikes. The Origin8 Bullhorn is a flat bar with great extensions for pushing hard on hills or speeding up. Brake levers or shifters can be placed at the end of the bars or on the flat section.

How many watts do aero handlebars save?

You can upgrade to an aero handlebar like a ZIPP SL-70 Aero handlebar and save 6.5w over your standard round bar; or if you want to really go the extra mile, consider an integrated bar/stem combo like the Vision Metron 6D Bar that our friends at EF Education First Pro Cycling are currently riding.

Are carbon handlebars more comfortable?

Instead of feeling each and every vibration, carbon handlebars can help absorb and damp that chatter. When you are out on a long ride, that might make the difference in more comfort for your hands. + Flex Pattern.

Are narrow handlebars more aero?

As you might expect, when you’re riding along on flat or rolling roads, handlebars this narrow offer a noticeably more aerodynamic position.

How much time do aero bars save?

This means that the true saving of aerobars compared to a similar aero position on a bike without them is about 1:15mins.

Are clip on aero bars worth it?

There are numerous benefits to using clip-on aero bars and if you are a triathlete, clip-on aero bars are definitely worth it. The position you adopt while using the bars can represent some of the best savings per dollar spent. Because of the aerodynamic advantage, energy saving is another major benefit.

How wide should my aero bars be?

A good rule of thumb: line up your elbows with the width of your hips. If your shoulders are broad, position the bars to keep your hands close together, which minimises the amount of air that flows through to your stomach.

How big a difference do aero bars make?

AERO BARS MAKE YOU ~1min 40s per 40KM FASTER

The advantage of adding aero bars on your road bike is to lower your upper body to a more aero position. You create less drag and hence go faster for the same amount of effort.

Can you put aero bars on a flat bar bike?

Yes, just make sure that the clamp diameter fits your handlebars as there are a number of standards (31.7mm, 35mm, etc.). You may have to play around with your brakes to make everything fit depending on your bar width, but I don’t see why a pair of clip on aero bars wouldn’t work on a flat bar hybrid.

At what speed do aerodynamics matter?

Aerodynamics start to have a more noticeable affect on a vehicle at around 50 mph. If you’re traveling slower than 50 mph, the weight of the aerodynamic devices are probably more of a penalty than any perceived gain in performance.

How much faster is a skinsuit?

When compared to a jersey and bib shorts, our testing has shown that a skinsuit is 21 to 28 seconds faster on a 25-mile-time trial when travelling at around 25mph. We tested this at a velodrome, using aCdA (coefficient of drag * area) measuring system.

How do you size aero bars?

Quote from video: And so having reach adjustment means that you're not going to get too stretched out on your bike. Generally. You'll find the lower you go the shorter. You'll want your Aero. Bars.

Why are aero bars not allowed?

Aerobars can be considered less safe for a few reasons: mostly because your hands are not on the brakes while riding in the aerobars. It also takes more practice and skill to maintain a straight line in the aerobars (especially in cross winds) due to how close your arms are together.

What does Aerobar mean?

: a set of bicycle handlebars or handlebar extensions that are designed to put a rider’s body in a low, aerodynamic position.

Can you put aero bars on a hybrid bike?

Hybrids are not really designed to have aerobars, the geometry doesn’t really lend itself to that. My suggestion would be to get rid of the aerobars, and get handlebar extensions for the ends of the bars, much like you see on many mountain bikes.

Why do road bikes go faster than hybrids?

It isn’t hard to imagine that the leaned forward riding position of a road bicycle frame will reduce the frontal area of the rider thus resulting in lower aerodynamic drag. Lower drag at equal power output means more speed, hence the road bike geometry will always make the rider faster than the hybrid bicycle geometry.

How much faster are drop handlebars?

Over long distances, the energy-savings adds up. For example, maybe you can ride an extra 1 mile per hour on average with drops. Over the course of a one month bicycle tour you may be able to travel 200 miles further than you would with flat bars. This is significant.
