How tight should brakes and shifters be on the handlebars?

On a road bike you’ll want them fairly tight to be able to ride on the hoods without the brake levers turning away or moving downward on the bar. On a mountain bike, at least the brake levers should be able to rotate away in case of a crash.

How tight should brake levers be?

The clearest giveaway that something is wrong with your brakes is if the brake lever is too tight or too loose. If the lever touches the handlebars, the brake cable is too loose. If you can barely squeeze it at all, the cable is too tight. Ideally, the brake lever should squeeze 3-4cm before becoming difficult.
