How precise do spoke sizes need to be?

4 min read

Asked by: Nicole Reynolds

In essence, you will want to be pretty precise. 2mm too long might just be ok, 2mm short might be too short. Be sure to measure the ERD yourself (!) and as precise as you are able to.

Does 1mm make a difference in spoke length?

One of the reason is that if the spoke is 1mm longer than it needs to be, then the builder may not be able to get the proper tension on the spoke, because they run out of threads on the spoke since you have to turn the nipple in further to make up for the extra length.

How do I know what size spokes to buy?

Quote from video: The way we do that is by screwing a spoke on each end of a nipple threading. It through opposite sides and then you can take the measurement of the difference in length.

How much does a spoke stretch?

Longer spokes will stretch more, thinner spokes will stretch more, higher tensioned spokes will stretch more, and a spoke can stretch up to 1mm.

What is the most common spoke size?

The most common spoke nipple sizes are 3.23mm, 3.30mm, and 3.45mm. However, you might encounter other spoke nipple sizes ranging anywhere from 3.2mm to 9mm. Many spoke nipples are also square-shaped, including the most common sizes listed above.

Should drive side spokes be shorter?

Assuming that both sides use the same “cross” arrangement, the shorter spokes go on the drive side, so that the offset due to the drive mechanism will be compensated for and the wheel will be centered.

Do spokes stretch?

No, the spokes do not stretch over time. They can lose tension over time though. They will lose tension when the nipples compress the rim more, when they shift in the rim to straighten out and when the spokes bed into the hub more.

Can you cut spokes to length?

Spokes are secured to the rim via nipples which thread onto the spokes’ ends. To thread the spokes, one needs a special “spoke thread rolling machine“. You cannot re-thread a spoke with any other tool because spoke threads are “rolled in” rather than “cut” in. Or in other words, there’s no material loss.

Should all spokes be same tension?

They should all have approximately the same average tension. Due to imperfections in the hub and rim, the tension will rarely be exactly the same for all spokes. A difference of 20% between spokes is acceptable.

What is a good spoke tension?

Most rims have suggested ranges from 100 to 120 Kilograms-force, or 980 to 1177 Newtons. This is assuming there is no pressure in the tire. Though not super precise, squeezing is still a more accurate technique for judging spoke tension than feeling the amount of effort it takes to turn a spoke nipple.

How do you even out spoke tension?

Quote from video: Turn when spoke tensions are this tight a quarter of a turn will lower spoke tension quite a lot go around the entire wheel like this and then recheck your tensions.

How are spokes measured?

Pull both spoke heads inward towards the center to seat the nipples. Using the narrow tips of the caliper jaws, measure from inside to inside of each J-bend. Record this measurement to the nearest tenth of a millimeter. In our example, each spoke measured 266 mm, with the J-bend-to-J-bend at 35.7 mm.

How do you lace a bike with 32 spokes?

Quote from video: Feel free to flex them around you can literally bend them and once once you start truing the will everything will pull into shape. So we go under under over.

What size are road bike spokes?

3.23mm, 3.30mm, and 3.45mm. are the most common sizes. While rare, some wheels come with spoke nipples in two different sizes; one size is used on the rim, while a different size is used on the other end of the spoke at the hub.
