How are open circuits diagnosed?

What is an open circuit defect?

Open Circuit Fault

An open-circuit faults is due to a break in the conductor, as at A (Fig), so that current cannot flow. Effects:- An Open circuit fault will not allow the motor to start. If the fault occurs in 1 phase when the motor is running, the current in other two phases will increase and burn out the motor.

What happens if you have an open circuit?

If there’s a break anywhere in the circuit, you have an open circuit, and current can not flow. In an open circuit, the two terminals are disconnected. Hence the continuity of the circuit is broken. But while current cannot flow through the circuit, there is some voltage drop between two points of a circuit.

Why is an open circuit a problem?

Any interruption in the circuit, such as an open switch, a break in the wiring, or a component such as a resistor that has changed its resistance to an extremely high value will cause current to cease. The EMF will still be present, but voltages and currents around the circuit will have changed or ceased altogether.
