How much travel do I want in a dropper post?

To choose the correct travel dropper post, measure from the seatpost collar to the seat rail (in your climbing, or highest setting) on your current bike. Subtract 50mm from this measurement and the resulting number is the maximum travel length dropper post you can comfortably run.

Does dropper post travel matter?

Even if you are looking primarily for maneuverability, smaller riders will get proportionally equal benefits from less post travel. While at the same time, a taller rider will benefit more from the long dropper allowing them to get their higher center of gravity further back and down to comparable levels.

What is the shortest dropper seatpost?

The 90mm OneUp Dropper can be shimmed down to either 70mm or 80mm, and is the shortest dropper post on the market in total length, insertion length and also stack height.

How is seatpost travel measured?

To figure out your max insertion length, measure from the frame bend, routing port, pivot bolt that stops the post from going down, etc. Basically, the spot where the post bottoms out in your frame, measure from there to the top of your seat tube.

Is 100mm dropper enough for XC?

The amount of travel you need will depend on your riding style. XC and gravel bikes tend to need less travel (60-100mm) versus trail and enduro bikes which can benefit from long drops (125-180mm). Dropper travel can be limited by frame size, rider height, and frame geometry.

Can I put a dropper post on any bike?

You could. But you wouldn’t. Dropper posts are most useful on mountain bikes, particularly in steep terrain. You might consider installing a dropper post on a gravel bike, if you traverse MTB trails where using a dropper post would improve your ride.

Do XC racers use dropper posts?

Dropper seatposts might have been popularized by enduro bike riders, but as brands have developed XC-specific options, the best short-travel dropper posts have now become increasingly prevalent on XC bikes, too.

How much does it cost to add a dropper post?

$350 – $500. Offering arguably the most choice to consumers, the $350 to $500 price bracket is stacked with options that are sure to provide riders with everything they need from a dropper seatpost.

Do dropper posts have a weight limit?

The minimum rider weight necessary to actuate the post is 44lbs (20kg) while the maximum rider weight supported at full post extension is 110lbs (50kg). Unlike last year’s shoes, the Fern’s 27.2 diameter and external cable routing ensure your kiddo won’t be growing out of this post in one season.

How do I know what dropper post I need?

How do I know what size of dropper post I need? Much like fitting any seatpost, you’ll need to know the internal diameter of your bike’s seat tube. This will often be written on your current post in millimetres or you can refer to the frame manufacturer’s specifications.

It supports the rider at a correct seat height for climbing and general cadence but can drop by a significant margin at the touch of a lever, to place you in a better attack position when descending.

Can you leave a dropper post down?

When the post is in the dropped position, that air pressure can be up to 3 times higher. Storing the bike with the dropper seat post in the down position puts significantly more stress on the internal seals and increases the chances of seal failure. We would recommend storing the post in an extended position.
