Are all freewheel threads the same?

Freewheel Threading

All recent freewheels and threaded hubs, regardless of where made, use ISO threading. The older British and Italian standards use the same thread pitch but a very slightly different thread diameter, and are generally interchangeable.

Do I need a new chain with a new cassette?

Most chain manufacturers recommend that their chains are replaced when they have elongated by 0.75%. Because the chain wears slightly faster than the cassette, this is the point where you can usually just replace the chain (and not the cassette) if both were new to start with.

Are cassettes and freewheels interchangeable?

They are attached using two different mechanisms – the Cassette, and the Freewheel. Although they look very similar and have the same function when fitted, they operate differently and are not interchangeable.

What type of cassette freewheel does my bike I have?

Quote from video: But here we have a reliable rule of thumb. Let's review it again as we spin the cogs counterclockwise a cassette stool fitting will also spend but on a freewheel.

How many freewheel thread sizes are there?

Freewheels are available in sizes 13T to 28T and in the same two different widths as the cogs (3/32″ and 1/8″).

Are 6 and 7-speed freewheels interchangeable?

If your bike currently has a regular-spaced 6-speed freewheel, you can generally upgrade to 7-speed with little trouble. Since the sprockets are closer together on a 7-speed freewheel, the overall width is only very slightly wider than a regular-spaced 6-speed.

When should I replace my cassette chain?

Quote from video: Like little shark's teeth. And that is a surefire sign that you need to replace the chain rings. But it's worth noting though that some teeth are always slightly different from the others they're a

How many miles should a cassette last?

Cassette lifespan can range between 4000 to 10000 miles, and this is affected by the cassette itself and maintenance frequency.

How often should you change your bike chain and cassette?

My rule of thumb is to replace it at 75 per cent wear (as measured with a chain-wear indicator). If you stick with this guideline, your cassette and chainrings will last a lot longer. A cassette, in most cases, can last for approximately two to three chain replacements if they are done at the right time.

Do all cassettes fit all hubs?

Both 6 and 7-speed HG cassettes are narrower in width and therefore can be installed on any of the above HG freehub bodies with the addition of a 4.5 mm spacer behind the cassette. However, newer 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12-speed cassettes cannot be fitted to old and narrower 7-speed freehub bodies.

How do I convert my cassette to freewheel?

Quote from video: And basically it's a very simple tool all it is just as metal bar with a little piece of chain there and a longer piece of chain here and all it's designed to do is to grip onto your sprockets.

Can I fit a 12 speed cassette on a 11 speed hub?

The 12-speed cassette is designed to be backwards compatible with the existing 11-speed road freehub, while the 12 speed-specific freehub (available on Dura Ace hubs currently) can’t be used with the 11-speed parts. Sram HG-style cassettes are largely the same spacing as Shimano, with the 10 speed exception.

How do I know what size freewheel I need?

Quote from video: On a bike it can be difficult to determine if you have a cassette or free will but this is the simplest way. After you remove the rear wheel from the bike spin the sprockets backwards.

Which is better freewheel or cassette?

Due to the lower number of gears, a freewheel system is usually better for the more casual rider. The freewheel system is generally better for cruising, so if you do not need the higher number of gears to be found in a cassette system then it is well worth considering.

How do you remove a threaded freewheel?

Quote from video: Turn the tool counterclockwise. It may take a good bit of force to loosen the freewheel from the hub. After it's loose remove the axle nut or skewering. That continue to unthread the freewheel.

What is the difference between freewheel and freehub?

Freewheel vs Freehub – Thread Differences

One of the main difference is that freewheels typically have a threaded hub. Bikes equipped with cassettes do not have a threaded hub, but instead, slip onto the hub with splines. But the differences, without getting too technical — go deeper than that.

Classic BMX gearing evolved over the years to be 44/16, which has approximately 55 gear inches. The most popular gear ratios are pretty close to a 55 inch, which just seems to feel best for most people. The number is derived from a simple formula: (chainring size / cog size) X wheel size.
