How do you match a chain and cassette ring?
In general, cassettes, chains and chainrings are compatible with each other across manufacturers. You just have to make sure you select a chain and chainrings that are compatible with the number of sprockets in the cassette. The number of rings on the crank does not matter.
Do all chainrings fit all chains?
Are they interchangeable? Largely speaking, yes. As long as your attempting to replace them with a chainring(s) designed to work with your chainset. Your cranks will have a specific bolt layout or fitment spec so you can’t just fit a BMX chainring to your triathlon bike.
Can I use a 12 speed chain on an 11 speed cassette?
Yes, a 12 speed chain will work fine with an 11 speed cassette. 12 speed chain is narrower than an 11 speed chain so it will fit between the adjoining cogs fine. You can not put an 11 speed chain on a 12 speed drivetrain, it’s too wide and will rub against the adjoining cogs.
Can I use a 10 speed chain on a 11 speed cassette?
Yes. In addition to the points Nathan makes about 10/11 speed compatibility, a new chain should really be installed with a new cassette in any case.
How do you know if a chainring is compatible?
One of the easiest ways to determine which chainring is going to be compatible with your crank is to simply type in your brand, type, groupset, and type, added with “chainring”, and possible the amount of teeth you want. You can find the type of the crank located at the back of it.
Is 11/32 cassette Good for hills?
For hill climbing and mountainous terrain, we recommend a road cassette such as the 11-32T SRAM Red 22 XG1190 11 Speed Cassette (A2), or the 11-34T Shimano Ultegra R8000 11 Speed Cassette.
Will a 10 speed chain work on a 7-speed cassette?
10-speed derailleurs are not compatible with 7-speed cassettes and should not be combined on your bike. You however may be able to make it work if you change the shifters and chains on your bike to 10-speed too, but it’s not advisable to match components of different speeds.
Will a 9 speed chain work on a 7-speed cassette?
A chain one size narrower than standard rarely presents any problem. Thus, you can use a “9-speed” chain with a 7-speed or 8-speed system, or a “10-speed” chain with a 9-speed system.
Will an 8 speed chain work on a 7-speed cassette?
A 7.1 mm wide 8-speed chain* will fit all the other systems (5, 6 and 7-speed ones).
Will a 10 speed chain work on a 11 speed chainring?
You can certainly use a Shimano 10-speed double crank and chainrings with Shimano 11-speed chain, derailleurs, shifters and cassette, however.
Will a 12 speed chainring work with 11 speed chain?
Condensed answer: A 12-speed chain can work with an 11-speed cassette. However, it’s recommended to avoid using a Shimano 12-speed chain because it doesn’t play well with 11-speed chainrings.
Will 12 speed chain work with 10 speed cassette?
-chains have the same outer dimension, the 12 speed derailleur would have narrower cogs than what required for a 10 speed. –As long as you can set the high/low limits on the derailleur to keep it on the cassette it should be fine.
What chainrings are compatible with Shimano?
In order for chainrings to be compatible with Shimano cranksets, they must have the same 110mm or 130mm BCD measurements as Shimano cranksets.
Can you use a Shimano chainring with SRAM chain?
Shimano and SRAM 11-speed chains are cross-compatible. If you have a Shimano 11-speed drivetrain, a SRAM chain will work fine and vice versa, however manufacturer’s recommend pairing your components for optimal performance.

What is the best chainring combination?
Standard Setup. Currently, the most common gearing setup on new road bikes is a 50/34 chainset with an 11-28 cassette. This means that the big and small chainring have 50 and 34 teeth, respectively, and the cassette’s smallest cog has 11 teeth and its largest cog has 28 teeth.
Do I need to change my cassette when I change my chain?
You certainly don’t need to change the cassette and chainrings every time you swap the chain, though, it’s just that you should check out the health and performance of these other drivetrain components as soon as you’ve installed a new one.
What chainrings are compatible with Shimano?

Do you need a new chain with a new chainring?
The chain and the chainrings work together — and wear together. When new rings are paired with a used chain, the used chain — even if it is not worn out — will accelerate wear on the new chainrings. So, even if the old chain is not worn too much, it’s best to start with both items new.
Can I put a new chain on an old cassette?
The chain and cassette wear together. If the chain was very worn, and you put a new chain onto an old cassette, at best it will wear the new chain faster than it should. At worst it will not engage properly and can skip or you may get poor shifting or even break the new chain.
How often should a bike cassette be replaced?
Very Roughly: bike cassette can last between 4000 to 6000 miles, and some can last up to 10,000 miles, an equivalent of 3 to 4 chains, it depends on the quality of the cassette itself, maintenance, and riding conditions.
