Can the players see the first down line?

Given that the first down yellow line is “digitally inserted” (for the TV broadcast audience), the players are unable see it, unless they look at a TV monitor/set. All they have is an estimate of the distance between the line of scrimmage and the first down spot (based on experience), and the markers on the sidelines.
