Can Nightcrawlers be frozen?

No they cannot, unless they all bunched together and a few didn’t freeze.. that’s your only hope. If they look deflated, toss them! I wouldn’t even thaw them out, that’s going to be a stinky mess. If they froze, place them in a very warm place- like the trunk of your car, and give them 7-10 days to thaw.

Will worms live if you freeze them?

Some species of worms can survive freezing surroundings as long as the worm its self does not freeze. Worms go into a similar to hibornation state called aestivus they curl up into a knot and the body fluids become more sugary helping them to not freeze. Some species die from just being very cold.

What happens if you freeze worms?

Worms tend not to freeze well, the slow freezing that you get in a domestic freezer allows large ice crystals to grow which cause a lot of damage to the cells. You very quickly end up with a black slimy mess after defrosting, few smells are quite like it.

How do you store live nightcrawlers?

Refrigerate at 40F. Remove sick or dead nightcrawlers immediately because they can infect the others.



We recommend:

  1. dump out entire contents.
  2. line box with 1-2 pages of newspaper.
  3. put dirt in the box.
  4. place worms back on top.
  5. refrigerate @ 40f.
  6. after 24 hours check to see that worms have gone down.


How long can you keep worms in a refrigerator?

Double the combined weight of the worms, and place that amount of food in the worm box. That will last them 4 days.
