Are rib boats good for fishing?

7 min read

Asked by: Kevin Sharp

A RIB boat can maneuver in tight spaces at peak efficiency. Fisherman and marine professionals alike will find that they’ll get more out of a RIB thanks to its ability to reach places they never would have before. Shallow waters can easily be traversed due to the nature of the RIB’s build.

Are rib boats good offshore?

RIB’s have a rigid fiberglass hull bottom with an inflatable collar around it. What you are describing is an inflatable with a hard floor. Both are good offshore if it is a quality boat but the true RIB is a better choise. In boats that size fuel capacity is a limiting factor.

Are rib boats any good?

The hard-hull, inflatable-collar combination gives RIBs their superior stability compared to traditional boats. The buoyancy of the tubes makes them virtually unsinkable and also very stable.

Are rib boats unsinkable?

RIBs handle waves more smoothly than rigid boats, meaning they won’t be beaten up as badly as other boats in choppy weather. This means it’s a near-unsinkable boat that even stays afloat with large amounts of water inboard.

How strong are rib boats?

5 to 300 horsepower

A RIB is often propelled by one or more outboard motors or an inboard motor turning a water jet or stern drive. Generally the power of the motors is in the range of 5 to 300 horsepower (4 to 224 kW).

What are the advantages of a RIB boat?

A major benefit of the RIB boat is its high maneuverability. Its build allows it to track well and maintain a stable ride even through the roughest of waters. Their buoyancy tubes ensure that they’re practically unsinkable and makes for the smoothest of rides.

How long do RIB boats last?

Inflatable boats can last anywhere from 2-25 years, primarily depending on the material they are made of, and how they are cared for!

What inflatable boats do Navy Seals use?

The Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat is a high-speed, high-buoyancy, extreme-weather craft with the primary mission of SEAL insertion/extraction and a secondary mission of marine interdiction operations. The RHIB is also used by U.S. Navy sailors for visit board and search operations at sea.

How much fuel does a RIB use?

However at cruising speeds almost all ribs run at roughly 1 L/NM (+/- 20%).

Whats the difference between a RIB and a SIB boat?

While the soft hull can make them less rugged than RIBs, SIBs are easy to deflate and store, and they are often more affordable. Meanwhile, RIBs are safer to use at high speeds and in choppy waters. They also usually have secure seating and storage space, making them more comfortable than SIBs.

How stable are RIB boats?

Rigid inflatable boats have a hard hull of aluminium or composites which makes them safe to travel at high speeds. Many people choose to buy a RIB as they find the speed fun and exhilarating. These boats are also very stable even in the choppiest of conditions.

How do you drive a RIB boat?

Steering a RIB is similar to driving a car, turn the wheel right to turn right and left to turn left. The main difference is there are, of course, no wheels. Instead, the steering is connected to the outboard engine or an outdrive (if it’s an inboard engine) situated at the back of the boat.

How far can a RIB go?

With a cruising range of 500 nautical miles and rated up to 450hp, this is a top-quality sea boat. It’s capable of carrying up to 25 people and has a top speed of around 37 knots. Featuring a high-quality finish, the Oceanus is as good a cruising RIB as pretty much anything else on the market.

What is the difference between RIB and CIB?

RIBs are considered to be far more comfortable as they often have secure seating and storage space. Some RIBs have long and narrow, deep V-shaped hulls designed for very high performance. Others have wider hulls with a shallower V-shape at the bow, flattening out at the stern, which provide a more comfortable ride.

What is the most fuel efficient boat?

Trawler Boats

Trawler-style boats are a type of displacement hull boat that can be operated with relatively little power and fuel consumption. Many trawlers operate on diesel engines, which tend to be among the most fuel efficient boat motors.

What is the most efficient speed for a boat?

between 25-30mph

For most boats, an engine’s most efficient running speed falls between 25-30mph. Diesel engines find their sweet spot somewhere beyond 1800rpm. Gasoline outboards usually find it between 3000-4000rpm.

What does wot mean in boating?

wide-open, throttle

Part of the process involves running the vessel at full, or wide-open, throttle—what engine manufacturers often refer to as WOT.

Does it hurt outboard to run full throttle?

Getting the engine at its highest throttle all the time is fine, as long as you’re sure it goes to full power with no issue. Power of smaller engines usually ranges from 65-150 mph. An engine wears out very rarely. Staying up with maintenance will make your operation go smoothly.

What RPM should I run my boat at?

Most mechanics and engineers suggest the best cruising speeds are achieved at 3400 and 3800 rpm respectively.

What RPM should a boat idle?

1500 RPM is normal for idle. You can see some fluctuation (1500-1800), especially if plugs get old or you are out of the water on the hose with no resistance on the impellers.

Is it OK to run boat at full throttle?

Does this mean an engine should never run at wide-open throttle (WOT)? Absolutely not. Modern engines are designed to handle WOT. Also, during break-in going to WOT, as prescribed by the owner’s manual, is necessary to properly seat the pistons’ rings.

How often should you run boat engine?

A few hours every week keeps the motor in better shape than using it two or three full days every month. The more often it gets used, the better it will run, just like any vehicle. If it’s left sitting idle at the marina or in a garage for the majority of the time, parts tend to go bad faster.

How far below boat should prop be?

If you have a short shaft motor, the top most part of the transom and the lower most part of the boat should be about 15 to 16 inches. For a long shaft, I think 20 to 21 inches is correct.

Why does the front of my boat go up?

Porpoising, or the bow bobbing up and dow, is caused by over-trimming at cruising speed; there’s no longer enough hull in the water to support the weight of the boat. Either trim down a little until the porpoising stops, or increase boat speed slightly to create more lifting force under the hull.

What happens if outboard is too high?

If it’s too high, the propeller tends to ventilate, losing its bite on the water and blowing out while turning and in steep seas. “If the prop consistently ventilates when heading down a steep wave, the outboard is probably set too high,” says Dean Corbisier, advertising and public relations manager for Suzuki Marine.

How do you tell if your boat needs a short or long shaft?

Measure from the top of your transom to the bottom of your keel. If it is from 15″ to 17″ long you’ll need to get a Tohatsu outboard with a “short” shaft. If it is from 20″ to 22″ long you’ll need our “long” shaft outboard.

What size motor do I need for a 20 foot fiberglass boat?

Tips for selecting the right size hp for portable outboard motor for your boat.

Motor HP Boat length (feet) Boat length (metres)
5hp – 15hp 8′ – 14′ up to 4.2m
9hp – 20hp 11′ – 16′ up to 4.5m
20hp – 40hp 13′ – 18′ up to 5.0m
40hp – 75hp 14′ – 20′ up to 5.5m

What happens if you put a long shaft motor on a short shaft boat?

Re: Longshaft motor on a short transom skiff? It will will *run* fine, but it can cause bad handling. Also trim position settings will have a greater effect. No harm to try it, carefully, and see how it goes.
