Can you mix wet lube and dry lube?
Doubtful. Differing lubricants can act as solvents for each other, causing it to drip out and be lubeless. This was attributed as the cause of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 crashing; differing maintenance crews lubed the horizontal trim jackscrew with two different lubricants.
Is dry lube better than wet lube?
A dry lube doesn’t attract dirt and for that reason it’s a better lube for dry conditions, but the downside is that it often does not last as long as wet lube. So if you’re doing short rides in sunny weather on dry roads, a dry lube is a good pick.
Can you mix chain lube?
They do not mix or work well at all if applied over the top of factory grease; it is like mixing water and oil. It is just a fail. You will end up with a gunky mess doing nothing great for your chain and drivetrain as well as your chain’s efficiency.
How often should you reapply dry lube?
Dry chain lube typically has a lifespan of up to 100 miles. Wax chain lube should be reapplied every 50 to 100 miles. Wet chain lube can last well over 100 miles, and Finish Line’s Ceramic Wet Chain Lube can reportedly last even longer with a limit of 175 miles.
Do you need to wipe off dry lube?
By moving to the dry lube, we moved to the “clean chain” concept, and had no issues. Note that this is a “wax” lubricant, the active compound of which is suspended in a carrier liquid. The wax is actually very good at binding with the metal as a dry lube, but the carrier liquid needs to be wiped away.
Does dry lube wash off?
Once it has been applied you don’t need to do anything because the solvent will evaporate and dry up. This is why dry lube does a great job at not letting dust, dirt, or debris collect on the chain. Dry lube will come off in wet conditions fairly quickly, and almost wash away when riding in rain or puddles.
What does dry lube do?
Dry lubricants or solid lubricants are materials that, despite being in the solid phase, are able to reduce friction between two surfaces sliding against each other without the need for a liquid oil medium.
Does chain lube make a difference?
It also helps prevent corrosion and reduces friction and drivetrain wear. While an under-lubricated chain increases friction by enabling too much metal on metal contact, an over-lubricated chain will attract dirt and grit, which will increase friction and drivetrain wear as well. The trick is getting it just right.
What chain lube do pro teams use?
But we do know that they’re exclusively using Morgan Blue lubes and cleaners. Plenty of pro teams swear by Morgan Blue.
How long does dry lube take to dry?
2-4 hours
Dry lubes, also called solid lubricants go on wet and dry for 2-4 hours, resulting in a dry chain. A solid/dry lubricant is a lubricant that uses special materials in the formula to provide a protective layer against dust and dirt.
Is WD-40 a good lubricant?
Should you use WD-40 as a lubricant? While WD-40 does have some lubricating properties, it is not a good lubricant and should not be used for this purpose. Using it on anything that needs proper lubrication (bike chains, treadmills, garage doors, etc.) will not give you the results you want.
Can WD-40 be used as chain lube?
WD-40 is a great bike chain lube water based lubricant and will not only lubricate the chain well, but will also keep it rust and corrosion free. It also minimizes the accumulation of dirt which reduces the wear and tear of the chain.
What is the difference between wet and dry chain lube?
Wet – Wet lube is a lube meant for riding in wet or muddy conditions. It last long but can attract dirt and buildup overtime. Dry – Dry lube is a lightweight lube that can be applied multiple times; however, it does not last long and washes off easily with water.
How do you apply dry lube?
Quote from video: To apply dry lube begin back peddling with the chain toward the middle of the cassette. Spray a steady stream of lubricants until the chain is fully. Coated.
Should you wipe chain after lubing?
In fact too much oil attracts more dirt to stick to the chain and wear increases. Therefore after lubing excess oil needs to be removed. To do this wait for 5 minutes after oiling the chain, turn the drivetrain over a few times then use a dry rag to wipe off any excess.
Does dry lube attract dirt?
It Won’T Attract Dirt Or Dust, And Is Safe For Temperatures From -50° F To 500° F.

What is wet lube used for?
Wet lubes are used in all weather conditions but really come to the fore when riding in autumn and winter as they are water resistant so won’t get washed off riding through puddles or in a rainstorm. Most wet lubes will provide efficient lubrication for over 100 miles of riding with one application.
How long does it take lube to dry?
For best results allow a few minutes to dry. In wet conditions it is important to allow lube to dry completely. Initial application: Remove factory grease and other lubricants. Apply to clean chain and repeat after 5 minutes.
