Will mountain bike front derailleur work on road bike?

MTB vs road FD

Shimano road and MTB FDs have different cable pull ratios – that is the amount of FD movement for each mm of cable movement. This means that MTB FDs might not work well with indexed road shifters and vice versa.

Are all Shimano shifters and derailleurs compatible?

Just for clarity, current generation (10-, 11- and 12-speed) Shimano road and mountain bike components are not inter-compatible with each other because they use different cable pull ratios. For example, you couldn’t use a set of road shifters with a mountain bike rear derailleur.

Are Shimano front derailleurs interchangeable?

On some frames with a consistent seat-tube diameter, the use of a high-clamp or low-clamp front derailleur is completely interchangeable.

Do shifters have to match derailleur?

No, different maker or different model with different number of “speed” shifters have different pull ratio (i.e. the length of cable pulled by a single shift).

Why do mountain bikes have no front derailleur?

Mountain bikes no longer have a front derailleur because of the invention of the wide range rear cassette, meaning you can have the same range of gears with fewer parts, which saves weight, and keeps things simpler. Also making the bike build look cleaner.

What is the difference between MTB and road derailleur?

The main differences to the drive train is the length of the rear derailleur arm. MTBs have lower and wider spaced gearing which means the rear derailleur has to handle a bigger span in chain length.

Can you mix shifters and derailleurs?

In many instances, it is possible to mix different levels of shifters and derailleurs from the same brand (e.g. Dura-Ace/Ultegra/105; Red/Force/Rival; Super Record/Record/Chorus), however it’s not safe to assume that this will always be the case.

Can you mix and match Shimano components?

It is possible to mix and match as long as you get components from the same generation. For example: 9000 Dura Ace, 6800 Ultegra, and 5800 105 are all cross compatible. Each have 11-speeds in the rear, use the same cable pull per shift and use the same front derailleur design.

How do I know what size front derailleur I need?

1) Clamp Diameter or Interface

“Clamp-On” front derailleurs come with a clamp of a specific diameter, which are meant to fit around different kinds of bicycle frames. Most frames will be either 28.6mm, 31.8mm or 34.9mm in diameter, but certain bikes made before the 1980s will have a slightly smaller tube diameter.

Can you mix and match front derailleur?

The only two ways the front derailer and rear derailer must be compatible are 1) they must be assuming the same chain width (or at least reasonably close), and 2) they must combine to produce a reasonable chainline (more a function of the crankset than the front derailer).

Are mountain bike derailleurs universal?

No, bike derailleurs are not universal. A derailleur that works with one bike may not work with another bike based on factors such as the cage length. Check the difference between the smallest and largest cogs and also the chainring size to determine the derailleur compatibility.

Can you use a SRAM derailleur with Shimano shifters?

The SRAM rear derailleur (mech) will not work with a Shimano shifter as is; the cable pull and shift activation ratios are not the same between the two systems.

Should I get rid of my front derailleur?

Always in the wrong gear

Removing the front derailleur isn’t really a good idea, gear wise unless you have a good reason to. All you’re doing is taking away the little mechanism that moves the chain from one front ring to another. If you’re not happy with the shifting, get it tuned, not remove it.

Why bikes are being sold with only one gear in front?

Q: Why bikes are being sold with only one gear in front? These bikes are called 1X or OneBY drivelines. They have only a single chainring and a wider ratio rear cassette. Their advantage is that they don’t have a front derailleur or shifter.

Can I use a 9 speed front derailleur on a 8 speed?

In practice, they are interchangeable. You can use a 9 speed FD on an 8 speed crank.

How long do front derailleurs last?

Others will last two decades. It totally depends on the design, brand, materials, usage, and more on luck.

How do I stop my bike chain from rubbing on the front derailleur?

If the chain is rubbing the outer edge of the derailleur cage, try increasing the cable tension using the barrel adjuster by turning it counterclockwise one quarter to one half turn at a time—increasing the tension will pull the cage out and farther away from the bike.

Is it normal for chain to rubbing on front derailleur?

It is possible that the front derailleur will rub the chain slightly even on properly adjusted bikes. This is likely on some bikes when riding in the largest sprocket in front and the smallest cog in back.

Why does my chain hitting my front derailleur?

If the derailleur rubs in the largest front chainring, double check H-limit screw and inner wire tension, which may be too loose. If chain is slow to shift to smallest chainring, double check L-limit screw and inner wire tension, which may be too tight.
