How long does novice linear progression last?

We refer to this stage of training as a linear progression, because the weight on the bar progresses in a sequential series of steps. Depending on the trainee’s athletic history, this time period lasts from as little as three months to as much as nine months.

When should I stop starting strength?

You should move on when you can no longer make progress from day to day. This occurs when you consistently fail a set of either squats or deadlifts and have gone through the reset period that Rippetoe describes. Once this happens, you have officially become an intermediate lifter.

After injury, reset 5–10% or as much as needed to train with minimal to no increase in pain above its level at rest. Your warm ups are a little aggravating but if you continue to warm up and feel improvement, good. You should never feel worse over the course of your working sets.

Summary. Starting Strength is quite good at what it does. It’s a minimalist program that teaches the big powerlifting lifts in a way that’s worse for powerlifting but better for gaining general strength. The book itself is quite good, too, and if you plan on growing old with a barbell, it’s a great read.
