Why are threadless stems better?

Threadless stems allow for the lighter carbon fiber or aluminum alloy steerer tubes, and hence a lighter overall bicycle. Threadless stems can be changed with a single allen wrench. (Some quill stems also use a single allen wrench.)
Are all quill stems the same size?
Quill stems come in different steerer tube and handlebar sizes. It is wise to measure your components to ensure that you are installing or ordering the correct stem. The most common handlebar diameters are 22.2, 25.4, 26.0, 31.8 and 35.0mm. There are some outliers on some older bikes.

Are quill stems better?
Height Adjustability
Quill stems allow you to quickly adjust their height via an Allen key. This is the strongest technical advantage of quill stems over threadless models. If you have a threadless set-up, you will have to purchase a new stem and/or bars to increase the height of your handlebars.
Are bike stems interchangeable?
It depends on your bar diameter. Oversize bar is 31.8mm for both road and mountain bars, so the stems are interchangeable. For historical reasons[1], most of “standard” drop bars and stems for those are 26.0mm and other bars are 25.4mm.
Will any stem fit any bike?
Stems are available to fit a range of steerer tube sizes with 1 1/8” being by far the most common on both MTB and road bikes. However some models are also available for older bikes with 1” steerers (although a shim can also be used to make these fit standard stems) or for gravity bikes with 1.5” steerer tubes.
