4 min read

Asked by: Justin Webb

Also known as castellated nuts, castle nuts are particularly useful for locking certain items in place on a project when you don’t want to use special locking nuts and bolts. A castle nut is easy to use because you can thread it without using a wrench initially.

What is the point of a castle nut?

A castellated nut, also known as a castle nut, has three notches in one end, giving an appearance similar to the crenellated battlements of a castle. Castellated nuts are a positive locking device that’s used to ensure that the nut remains affixed and resists vibration.

Do castle nuts provide a locked joint?

Castellated nuts, often called a castle nuts, employ cotter pins as a locking mechanism. We will walk through two key points that render many castle nut bolted joints ineffective and unreliable.

Example.

Thread Diameter 1.0″
Bolt Stretch Distance 0.018″
Clamping Angle (near zero to full clamp) 51.8°

What is the difference between a castle nut and a slotted nut?

Castle Hex Nuts are similar to Slotted Hex Nuts except the slots are cut into cylindrical portions that are equal in length to the slot depth and slightly smaller in diameter than the hex width. They are used with a cotter pin and drilled fastener to prevent loosening.

Why is a washer installed under a nut?

Most notably, washers protect the surface from damage during installation. They distribute the pressure and prevent the fastener from moving or corroding. Skipping on washers can dramatically reduce the lifespan of how your product is put together.

How do you use a lock nut?

The threads of the bolt and nut to seize together making it almost impossible to remove them from one another without having to either cut the bolt or split the nut as.

Does the washer go on the bolt or nut side?

If there is only one washer used with a nut/bolt, it usually goes on the nut side. The nut in most circumstances is more movable, and is more commonly turned to tighten the assembly. The washer helps prevent damage to the surface of the object being fastened.

Are often used under cap screw heads and under nuts?

Lock Washers – High Collar. High collar lock washers are designed to fit under the head of a socket cap screw. Split ring lock washers are used to prevent nuts, bolts and screws from vibrating loose. These washers are rings which are split at one point and bent into a helical shape.

What is the point of a metal washer?

Load Distribution

The primary purpose of most washers is to evenly distribute the load of the threaded fastener with which they are used. Threaded fasteners stress the material in which they are driven. Driving a screw into wood, for example, may cause the wood to crack around the surface.

Do you need a washer with a nut?

Washers are important. They ensure that a nut is installed properly and prevent softer materials from damage by distributing the pressure over a greater surface area.

How do washers and nuts work?

Often used with nuts, bolts and other fasteners, washers are thin plates with central holes used to distribute the pressure load between two joining surfaces. They also keep nuts or bolts from driving into the material of the surfaces being joined.

Are washers necessary on skateboards?

Do you need washers for skateboard bearings? Normal skate bearings need speed washers (or “speed rings”) to stop the bearing from fouling on the axle nut or the hanger face. Some trucks also don’t have enough thread on the axle to tighten the nuts down enough if you don’t have speed rings.

Can you skate without speed rings?

Speed Rings are an often overlooked part of your skateboard, but not having them could be greatly jeopardizing your performance! Speed rings go on the outside of your bearings to give more clearance, allowing an uninhibited continuous roll.

Do Bones Reds come with spacers?

Includes a set of 8 Bones Reds Bearings, 8 Speed Washers, and 4 Bearing Spacers. Instructions and Sticker are included in the box of Bones Reds Bearings. Bones Reds Bearings fit all skateboard wheels.

Do bearing spacers slow you down?

This will slow your bearings down and wear them out super fast! Skaters without bearing spacers might find it easier to just run their axle nuts a bit loose to keep the wheels spinning freely. This is even worse! A wheel that is loose on the axle will give a noisy, chattery ride.

Can you skate without spacers?

Bearing spacers are totally optional; longboarders and casual skaters likely won’t put enough pressure on their boards to ever need them, though they are definitely a good investment if you want to slide, do a lot of tricks, and generally skate hard.

What is a 608 bearing?

The 608 is a 8 mm Ball Bearing that can be used in many rotary and factory automation applications. The 608 Miniature Ball Bearings is an open style bearing. The 608Z ball bearing is a single row raceway and single shielded. The 608ZZ ball bearing has a single row raceway and it is shielded on each side.
