What does altrenogest do for horses?

Altrenogest is indicated to suppress estrus in animals to facilitate induction of normal estrous cycle activity. It is used in mares to facilitate scheduled breeding activity. It is also used to suppress estrous behavior in performance horses.

What is the purpose of Regumate?

Regu-mate (altrenogest) is a synthetic hormone used to suppress the behavioral signs of heat (also called oestrus or being in season). It is an oil solution for oral use either directly on the mare’s tongue or in the feed. As a mare enters heat and prepares for breeding, her levels of oestrogen rise.

Why do horses need Regumate?

Regu-Mate® (altrenogest) Solution 0.22% is indicated to suppress estrus in mares. Suppression of estrus allows for a predictable occurrence of estrus following drug withdrawal. This facilitates the attainment of regular cyclicity during the transition from winter anestrus to the physiological breeding season.

What can Regumate do to you?

Repeated contact with the product may lead to negative effects on the female reproductive system, such as disruption of the menstrual cycle, uterine or abdominal cramping, and prolongation of pregnancy. It may also potentially cause loss of libido in men.

What happens if a female touches Regumate?

Acute effects after single exposure are possible; however, continued daily exposure has a greater potential for these effects. Acute effects include disruption of the menstrual cycle, uterine or abdominal cramping, increased or decreased uterine bleeding and headaches.

When should I start Regumate?

Behavior Suppression
Regumate is the hormone most commonly prescribed for suppression of estrus in mares. Treatment should begin a minimum of three days prior to a show or event and must be continued daily to attain and maintain estrous suppression.

Can Regumate make mares worse?

In some mares Regumate can even worsen their behaviour, becoming more irritable, touchy and even overly aggressive.

Does Regumate really work?

Progesterone is the dominant hormone in the mare’s reproductive cycle and therefore daily supplementation with Regumate™ will prevent a mare from coming into season. Regumate™ is very effective and easy to use.

Does Regumate stop seasons?

The use of a synthetic hormone is often used to aid diagnosis in cases where it is unclear whether or not the behaviour is a symptom of the mare being in oestrous. Regumate™, a synthetic progesterone, has the effect of stopping a mare from coming into season.

How long can you keep a mare on Regumate?

Regu-Mate® (altrenogest) is a form of progesterone that can help you reliably mange your mare’s estrous cycle. When given daily for up to 15 consecutive days, Regu-Mate reliably keeps mares from entering estrus. [1] When use of Regu-Mate is discontinued, mares will come into heat within 4 to 5 days.

Does my mare need Regumate?

Once again, we have to ask “does my mare need Regumate”, and if there is not a clear indication of continued low progesterone levels (generally 4 ng/ml is considered sufficient to maintain pregnancy, although 2 ng/ml is considered sufficient by some researchers5), then the answer is probably “no”.

Can you put Regumate in feed?

MINIMIZE THE REGUMATE MESS
It is an oily liquid that is top-dressed over feed one time daily. It is usually not used in the winter when a horse is anestrous.
