Normal gait is a series of rhythmical, alternating movements of the trunk and limbs which results in the forward progression of the center of gravity. It is generally established by 4-8 years of age.
What is normal gait speed for older adults?
These estimates are slower than that regarded as normal for community-dwelling adults older than 70 years of age. A comfortable gait speed for healthy women aged between 70 and 79 years is 1.13 m/s and for men 1.26 m/s (14). For women and men aged 80–99 the values are 0.94 m/sec and 0.97 m/sec, respectively (14).
What is safe gait speed?
0.4 to 0.8 m/sec: Limited community ambulator. 0.8 to 1.2 m/sec: Community ambulator. 1.2 m/sec and above: Able to safely cross streets.
What is normal gait speed in m s?
between 1.2 and 1.4 m/s
To follow the International Standards of Measurement, gait speed should be expressed in m/s. Collectively, the range for normal WS for adults is between 1.2 and 1.4 m/s.
What does gait speed mean?
The time it takes to walk a specified distance, usually 6 m or less. Slower speeds correlate with an increased risk of mortality in geriatric patients.
How do you measure gait speed?
A distance of 3-10 meters is measured over a level surface with 2 meters for acceleration and 2 meters for deceleration. Examinees walk at their comfortable (normal/natural) speed over the entire distance (referred to as comfortable speed).
What does a slow gait speed indicate?
They reported that slow gait speed prior to surgery, defined as 0.83 m/s or less, is a primary independent predictor of mortality and major morbidity after coronary artery bypass or valve replacement or repair. The study also found that slow walkers were more likely to be women and have diabetes.
