What is a BA set?

3 min read

Asked by: Amy Pekelder

Breathing apparatus is a key piece of equipment for firefighters across the world. Our breathing apparatus consists of one or two oxygen cylinders and an oxygen mask that securely covers the whole face. Since the 1960s we have been using compressed air breathing sets.

Where is BA set used?

For use in applications such as firefighting or confined space work, a reliable BA set works as life-saving personal protection equipment. Situations where workers may be required to use a breathing apparatus set include firefighting, rescue operations, mining and chemical plant work.

What are the parts of BA set?

BA set components

The three main components are the high pressure cylinder or tank, the pressure regulator, and the inhalation connection / device. This might be a mouthpiece, mouth mask or face mask. BA sets can be integrated into gas tight suits.

How is BA set calculated?

The duration of the cylinder can be calculated with this formula: volume (in liters) × pressure (in bars) / 40 – 10 in minutes (the 10 is subtracted to provide a safety margin), so a 6-liter cylinder, of 300 bar, is 6 × 300 / 40 – 10 = 35 minutes working duration.

What is breathing apparatus set?

Self- Contained Breathing Apparatus

A SCBA set consists of 3 main components – a cylinder of compressed air, a back-plate that holds the cylinder and reduces the air from high pressure (200-300bar) to medium pressure (5-11 bar) and this in turn supplies a face mask.

What are the 4 main components of SCBA?

SCBA consists of a backpack and harness, air cylinder assembly, regulator assembly, and face piece assembly.

What are the purpose of BA set in fire service?

helps us to work in places where the air isn’t breathable. Breathing apparatus is a key piece of equipment for firefighters across the world. Our breathing apparatus consists of one or two oxygen cylinders and an oxygen mask that securely covers the whole face.

How long is a BA guideline?

Purpose of a personal line

The personal line allows all members of a BA team to either attach themselves individually to a guideline or for team members to attach to each other with the standard 1.25m length of line.

How many minutes is SCBA?

An SCBA cylinder capacity of 2,040 litres of compressed air gives the wearer approximately 51 minutes of air supply for full usage or approximately 30 minutes in working conditions.

How many types of SCBA sets are there?

There are two major types of SCBA that are in use today – the Open Circuit SCBA and the Closed Circuit SCBA. The main difference between the two is that the former one is used for rescue operations that tend to be very long.

How much pressure is in a SCBA?

There are three pressure options available: high-pressure SCBA cylinders that are pressurized to either 4,500 or 5,500 pounds per square inch (PSI), medium-pressure cylinders that are pressurized to 3,000 PSI and low-pressure cylinders that are pressurized to 2,216 PSI.

Why are firefighter air tanks upside down?

SCBA bottles that firemen use are mounted upside down because they are generally smaller than scuba tanks and the risk of damaging the valve while running through a burning building in zero viz is much higher than the risk of damaging a scube valve while swimming (or scootering) through a wreck or cave.
