What Changed with Shimano Hyperglide-C?

Asked by: Cameron Rohatinsky

What is HyperGlide C?

Shimano uses the trademark “Hyperglide-C” to designate a system with an 11 tooth sprocket. The “C” stands for “compact”. These systems are used with smaller-than-usual chainwheel sizes, or on bicycles that have a small drive wheel, or to achieve higher gears.

What is a HyperGlide sprocket?

Hyperglide is the name given by cycling component manufacturer Shimano to a sprocket design in their bicycle derailleur tooth cassette systems. It varies gear tooth profiles, and/or pins along the faces of freewheel or cassette sprockets, or between the chainrings in a crankset, to ease shifting between them.

Does Shimano SLX have HyperGlide?

Shimano SLX M7100 Chain HyperGlide + for Shimano 12sp

Features Sil-Tec, Shimano’s Ultra Low Friction treatment. Includes Shimano Quick Link. Shimano SLX chains are E-Bike as well as E-MTB approved.

How does HyperGlide work?

By adding ramps into the cassette shapes, the HYPERGLIDE system keeps the chain engaged with both cogs when shifting up from one to gear to the next. This leads to lighter, faster gear changes.

When did Shimano Hyperglide come out?

Hyperglide refers to the profiled teeth and ramps cut in to the outward face of each cog which enables the chain to climb to a lower gear easily. It was introduced in 1989 along with the 7 speed MTB & road groups, and has continued up to now with 9 speed MTB and 10 speed road groups.

Are all freewheels interchangeable?

No, freewheels are completely different from the cassette / free hub system and are not interchangeable. A freewheel includes the ratchet mechanism that allows the sprockets to rotate backwards as well as the sprockets themselves, and threads into the hub.

What cassette do pro cyclists use?

The most common cassette size used in the peloton is an 11-28t. That is positively humongous compared to the 11-21t cassette that was common a few decades ago when you’d be lucky if you got an 11-23t for the mountains. Since Shimano went to 11-speed though, the 11-28t cassette has become popular.

Are all Shimano 11 speed cassettes interchangeable?

When SRAM entered the road groupset market in 2006, it decided to adopt Shimano’s specifications for its chains and cassettes. As a result, the chains and cassettes from the two brands have always been completely interchangeable for any given type of transmission (e.g. 11-speed).

Are Shimano 9 speed and 10 speed cassettes interchangeable?

Interestingly, the reverse is not always true; you cannot use a 9 speed cassette on all 10 speed hubs. Shimano’s 10 speed specific hubs are only designed to be compatible with 10 speed cassettes and, as with most computer programs, downward compatibility does not work as well as upward.

Does Deore have Hyperglide?

The Deore cassette uses the same Hyperglide+ shifting tech which provides lighting quick shifting under torque both up and down the cassette.

Is SLX as good as XT?

The Shimano SLX components are based on the XT line but are designed in a way that allows them to be manufactured cheaper and, thus, sold at a lower price point. It would be wrong to call these components “budget” components because they still work quite well, but essentially, that is what they are.

Is Shimano SLX better than XT?

Compared to the SLX, the new XT feels more crisp and of slightly more high-end quality. However, the price will show if it’s really worth the upgrade. On a purely functional basis, there is little to complain about on the entry-level groupset.

Is Linkglide compatible with Hyperglide?

Apart from the chain, Linkglide components will not be compatible with current Hyperglide components.

Can you put a 9-speed cassette on a 10 speed hub?

Condensed Answer: A 9-speed Shimano or SRAM MTB cassette can be installed on a 10-speed Shimano or SRAM MTB hub right away. A 9-speed cassette is wider than a 10-speed road cassette and is therefore too big for 10-speed specific Shimano road hubs.

Are Freehubs interchangeable?

How does sprocket size affect speed?

A bigger rear sprocket/ smaller front sprocket will give you an increase in acceleration but decrease your top speed. A smaller rear sprocket/bigger front sprocket will reduce you acceleration but increase the top speed.

What is the difference between a cog and a sprocket?

A cogwheel is… basically any wheel with teeth (cogs). A gear is a wheel with cogs that mesh with the gears of another wheel. A sprocket is a wheel with cogs that mesh with a chain (or belt or tape or film or whatever).

What’s the difference between a sprocket and a gear?

In general, a gear is a toothed wheel designed to mesh with other gears and transmit movement to them, which in turn can cause movement elsewhere. A sprocket, conversely, is a toothed wheel designed to engage and directly move a flexible indented or perforated item, like a chain or belt.

What is a sprocket used for?

They’re regularly used on bicycles to pull a linked chain to turn the movement of the rider’s feet into rotation of the bike’s wheels. Sprockets are also used on tracked vehicles such as tanks and farming machinery. They line up with the links of a track and pull them as it rotates, allowing the vehicle to move.

Is more teeth on a sprocket better?

Adding teeth to the front and rear sprockets have opposite effects. Installing a larger countershaft sprocket creates higher gearing, while a larger rear sprocket lowers gearing. Similarly, a smaller front sprocket lowers the gearing while a smaller rear sprocket makes the gearing higher.

Does sprocket need ink?

The HP Sprocket Studio doesn’t require traditional ink, either, but its printing technology is a bit different. The dye-sublimation photo paper and cartridges it uses are unique to the printer, and they offer bright, glossy prints that resist moisture and dry instantly.
