What size is my quill stem?
Quill stems come in different steerer tube and handlebar sizes. It is wise to measure your components to ensure that you are installing or ordering the correct stem. The most common handlebar diameters are 22.2, 25.4, 26.0, 31.8 and 35.0mm. There are some outliers on some older bikes.

What does quill stem mean?

Should you grease quill stem?
Unless you want want of those circus bikes where your wheel goes in a different direction to the handlebars. A quill stem going in a steel steerer should be greased a little though. Simple rule: Grease anything where metal comes into contact with metal.
Does a shorter stem affect handling?
Stem length is one of a number of factors, along with head tube angle and fork rake, that affects a bike’s handling. Generally speaking, a shorter stem will result in faster handling, while a longer stem will result in slower, more predictable handling.
How do I choose a bike stem?
Put simply, if you want a racy, aggressive and aerodynamic position, a longer stem will provide a more stretched out riding position. If comfort is your top priority, a shorter stem length will bring the bars closer to the saddle and put you in a more upright position, placing less strain on your back.
How are bike stems measured?
Know the length by measuring from the middle bolt of the bike’s headset top to the center of the handlebar. Ensure that you measured the length in centimeters or millimeters. A bike stem length usually runs in 10 mm increments and starts from 70 mm to 140 mm.
Can you use a quill stem on a threadless fork?
The most common threadless conversions use a simple pipe with a quill wedge to lock in place of an existing quill stem. Then your stem clamps to that. The issue with these is that you retain the same threaded headset and simply introduce additional ways for things to go wrong.
Can I use a road bike stem on a mountain bike?
Oversize bar is 31.8mm for both road and mountain bars, so the stems are interchangeable. For historical reasons[1], most of “standard” drop bars and stems for those are 26.0mm and other bars are 25.4mm.

What is threadless stem?
A “threadless” stem refers to a system where a fork with a non-threaded steerer tube extends through the head tube. A stem (A) then clamps around the outside of the steerer tube along with spacers (B) if necessary. Finally, a top cap (C) keeps everything in place and acts as a headset adjustment.
