If you expect very snowy or icy conditions, studded winter tires and a wide tread pattern substantially increase grip. The majority of grip is achieved via the front tire. If you opt for just one studded tire, put it on the front.

Not good. Your best bet for ice is some sort of studded tire, if there are any available that narrow. For snow you need a lugged tire, and that requires clearance. Given the nasty effect of snow, ice, and salt on the bike you might be better off buying a used BSO with clearances you need.

Can you stud any bike tire?

Any tire with a tread depth of at least 5mm should do the trick, but the Jumbo Jim works great as it has sipes to guide the drill bit and also aids with inserting the stud. The best bit size for Jumbo Jim was 1/8″. I cut it to size and inserted it into the drill enough to be just a tad taller than the stud itself.
