Does a tapered fork need a crown race?

Straight 1 ⅛ in steerer tubes have a crown race seat of 30mm, so they require a 30mm crown race. Tapered steerer tubes can taper out to 1 ¼ in (33mm crown race seat) and sometimes have integrated crown races (like the 2nd image), so no press-fit crown race is needed.

Do you need a crown race on a carbon fork?

The crown race is the only thing that separates the headtube and fork. Without it, the headtube (of the frame) and fork will sit flush against each other. With no gap between the two surfaces, they will grind against each other, causing damage to both the forks and headtube.

How do you pick a crown race?

For example, a 52/40 crown race will work with a 52mm bearing and 40mm crown race seat diameter. First, figure out what size bearing your lower headset assembly takes. Then, confirm the crown race seat diameter on your fork.

The crown race ID is 26.5mm rather than 26.4mm and the threads are a tiny bit different, but ISO headsets are so close that they work absolutely perfectly on Italian frames. French sized frames use a 25.0mm steerer with a 22.0mm ID.
