Running speed versus running power – is there a difference?

3 min read

Asked by: Don Spain

Power is a measure of the work/effort that you are doing and at what speed. Pace is a measure of what speed you are doing but not the work/effort involved. Heart rate is a measure of your body’s reaction to the work/effort that you are doing.

Is running with power better than pace?

Running power, measured in Watts, is a way to measure the output of the work you’re doing when you run. The higher the Watts, the more power you’re generating with every step. The more power your can generate at a lower heart rate or faster pace, the more efficient you are.

What should my running power be?

Based on my observation, most of the elite and experienced runners can use 80% or more power in the horizontal direction which is a key factor of maintaining a great pace, and running more efficiently. There are several factors such as running cadence, vertical oscillation, body lean, etc.

Is a running power meter worth it?

Improved running form and efficiency
A running power meter can help you better see how your running technique and form correlate to your energy cost. Seeing your energy output as your form changes can help you smooth inefficiencies that can lead to fatigue later in a race.

What does running power mean?

It’s measured in a variety of ways from a handful of companies, but essentially running power is the measurement of how much work you’re putting in while you run. Running power is defined as a watt, and the more watts you produce, the more power you’re generating.

How do I increase my running power?

One of the best ways to increase your pace is to pick it up in short spurts: intervals. Interval training challenges your legs, strengthens your muscles to run at a faster pace, and improves your cardiac health, which can help you maintain a faster pace come race day.

How do you increase your running power?

Exercises that work well for runners include weight squats, deadlifts, lunges and box step ups and Anderson says that during the VO2 Max and power phases, he sometimes encourages his runners to lift heavier weight than when they’re in a more endurance based phase.

How does running power compare to cycling?

Running power is expected to be higher than bike power because metabolic efficiency is much higher for running than for cycling. This means athletes can convert the same amount of oxygen into more power when running than we can do when cycling.

What is a good running FTP?

FTP is the maximal running pace an individual can sustain for an effort of approximately 45 – 60 min in duration.
Practical Approaches to Determine a FTP.

How does power help speed?

So power is like putting a faster engine in your car without increasing the size of the car or the weight of the engine itself. This results in lower energy costs, less muscular fatigue, and ultimately better performance in any movement.

Does power affect speed?

Work and Power
A car with 80 horsepower can produce faster acceleration than a car with 40 horsepower. In the end, both cars are going 60 miles per hour, but the 80-hp engine can reach that speed faster.

Is more speed more power?

The power produced by an engine is called its horsepower.
In physics, power is defined as the rate at which something does work. For cars, horsepower translates into speed. So if you want to go faster, and get up to speed quicker, you need more horsepower.
