Can I use an 11 speed derailleur on a 8 speed cassette?

No this will not work. At a minimum you will need your chain, cassette, and shifters to be 11 speed. Should change your chainring too really. You can just Google any drivetrain component and there are charts that show you what it’s compatible with.

Can I use an 8 speed derailleur on a 6 speed cassette?

Easy answer. No, this won’t work with 8 speed indexed shifters. The reason is that one click on your shifter doesn’t move your derailleur enough to shift to the next cog on your 6 speed cassette.

Can you use a 10 speed derailleur on a 8 speed cassette?

You will need a 10 spd rear derailleur to work with a 10 spd cassette, because the spacing is smaller with a 10 spd setup. You will need a 10 speed chain for a 10 speed setup, a 9 speed chain for a 9 speed setup and any 8 speed chain will work on 8-7-6 speed or lower.

Will an 8 speed derailleur work on a 7 speed cassette?

yes it will work.

Will a 9 speed derailleur work on a 8 speed cassette?

Condensed answer: 8 and 9-speed derailleurs have the same rear shift ratio but only when both models are made either by Shimano or SRAM. In consequence, a 9-speed derailleur can work just fine with an 8-speed cassette produced by the same brand.

Can I put a bigger cassette on my bike?

Can I use an 8 speed chain on a 6 speed?

Chains for 6-, 7-, or 8-speed cassettes are generally universally compatible across brands and speeds. That means if a chain says “8-speed Shimano” you can use it in your old 6-speed, too. All you have to do is line up the new chain with the old one and cut it to size.

Are 6 and 8 speed chains the same?

Registered. 6,7, and 8 speed chains are identical in width. There is no difference in cog spacing on the three cassettes or freewheels, only a difference in the widths. The only chains that are narrower are 9 and 10 speed chains.

Will any derailleur fit my bike?

No, bike derailleurs are not universal. A derailleur that works with one bike may not work with another bike based on factors such as the cage length. Check the difference between the smallest and largest cogs and also the chainring size to determine the derailleur compatibility.

Are Shimano 8 and 9 speed compatibility?

Shimano derailleur compatibility

Most 8- and 9-speed Shimano mountain bike and road kit is inter-compatible because they both use the same cable pull ratio. This means that you can use an 8 -or 9-speed mountain bike derailleur with road shifters or vice versa.

Can I use a 9 speed rear mech with an 8 speed cassette?

yes you can use the derailer on the 8 speed cassette. The major difference between 8 and 9 speed is indexing. So for an 9 speed cassette you would need 9 speed shifters.

Can I change my 8 speed to a 9 speed?

Convert an 8-speed wheel to a 9-speed wheel.

Since the 8-speed sprocket and the 9-speed sprocket are the exact same size, it is possible to convert to 9-speed without changing the wheel. Simply remove the current 8-speed cassette sprocket and replace it with a 9-speed cassette sprocket to convert to 9-speed.

What is the difference between 8 and 9 speed chain?

7, 8, and 9 speed chains have the same inner width, but 9 speed chains have thinner outer plates for a thinner overall chain. So while a 9 speed chain works fine on a 7 or 8 speed drivetrain, it will be a weaker chain that tends to “stretch” faster.

Can I use a 9 speed derailleur on a 7 speed cassette?

You’ll be fine. I had a Deore 9-speed rear derailleur with a no-name Shimano 7-speed cassette and worked fine. The only thing is that you may need a bit more adjustment on the derailleur for the first setup because of the change.
