Race Face Crank/Chainring Compatibility

5 min read

Asked by: Jacob Williams

Will any chainring fit any crank?

You can replace the chainrings on your crankset, but not all chainrings will fit all cranks. First, different cranksets may have a different number of arms or direct-mount interfaces (connecting the cranks to the chainrings), and they may be positioned differently.

How do you know if a chainring is compatible?

One of the easiest ways to determine which chainring is going to be compatible with your crank is to simply type in your brand, type, groupset, and type, added with “chainring”, and possible the amount of teeth you want. You can find the type of the crank located at the back of it.

Does race face work with Shimano?

This chainring allows Race Face Cranks to be paired with Shimano Hyperglide+ 12-speed drivetrains.

Is Race Face compatible with SRAM?

The Race Face 3 Bolt Direct Mount Chainring is compatible with SRAM cranksets with a removable spider. It has a narrow-wide tooth profile that ensures ultimate chain retention.

Can you mix and match chainrings?

Most likely yes, one thing to consider is that not all teeth are the same, they are very similar but different manufacturers use different tolerances and such. So between brands you may get some shifting issues, but often times they will work just fine.

Is a bigger front chainring faster?

Bigger chainrings and cassette cogs run more efficiently than smaller ones but extreme cross-chaining can cancel out those efficiency gains.

Can I put bigger chainring on?

Yes, you can. This will make it suitable for diverse terrains and make pedaling easier. Putting a smaller chainring on your road bike isn’t a problem but you may have to change your crankset. Most road bikes come with double chainrings and can either be standard or a compact.

Does speed matter for chainring?

No, it doesn’t have to match your chain speed.

Are chainrings universal?

Are they interchangeable? Largely speaking, yes. As long as your attempting to replace them with a chainring(s) designed to work with your chainset. Your cranks will have a specific bolt layout or fitment spec so you can’t just fit a BMX chainring to your triathlon bike.

Are race face and Shimano bottom brackets interchangeable?

If it’s the Race Face X-type BB for 24mm cranks then yes they are interchangeable with the Shimano 24mm BB’s.

Are oval chainrings better?

As a direct consequence, Oval rings enhance a cyclist’s ability to spin with a smoother power delivery and feel much easier on legs while climbing. Meaning you will go faster and get less tired. You will actually feel your pedal stroke to be more “round” with an Oval chainring than with a round chainring.

How do you change a race face chainring?

Quote from video: We go to the backside of the crank arm and we remove this lock ring which is should just be finger tight. As it comes in the box.

Can you change chainrings without removing crank?

Condensed Answer: If the big chainring attaches to the drive-side crank via bolts, it’s possible to replace it without removing the cranks. If the chainring is permanently attached to the cranks via rivets, it’s not possible to get it off without removing the cranks.

Why pros dont use oval chainrings?

Riders with a smooth pedaling technique tend not to benefit from oval chainrings because they naturally don’t have much of a dead spot in their pedal stroke. Riders who exert most of their power in bursts while pushing down on the pedals tend to benefit much more.

Can I mix chainring brands?

While the demands for the chain and cassette are fairly stringent, chainrings (and cranksets) are far more forgiving, so it is possible to mix brands as well as 10- and 11-speed versions without having an impact on the quality of shifting.

Can you use any chainring on a bike?

Are they interchangeable? Largely speaking, yes. As long as your attempting to replace them with a chainring(s) designed to work with your chainset. Your cranks will have a specific bolt layout or fitment spec so you can’t just fit a BMX chainring to your triathlon bike.

Are all chainrings the same size?

Rings are supplied with different sizes with different amounts of teeth. The more teeth, the bigger the chainring. The number of teeth affects how much effort is needed to turn the pedals. The larger the chainring the more rotations of the rear wheel you’ll achieve by a single rotation on the front chainring.

Do all cranksets fit all bottom bracket?

In general terms, most cranksets can be fitted to a variety of bottom bracket shells, though much of this compatibility depends upon the availability of suitable hardware (see next section). Any incompatibilities that do arise are often related to the length and/or diameter of the crank axle.

How do I know what size chainring to get?

Quote from video: And you could go around it just count the number of teeth on the chainring. And that's real easy or often the chain rings will have a number stamped on theirs this is 53.

Should I go up in chainring size?

You will be better off with a smaller chainring. But if you are road cycling and riding in mostly flat areas with short and steep climbs, it is recommend that a larger chainring is best.
