Lubrication. The ideal rule for lubrication should be ‘a little but often’. Two or three drops of oil every week will maintain the hub in first class running order.
What oil is used for Sturmey Archer hub?
While you’re probably perfectly fine using 3-in-1 (I used to use it BITD when I owned a Raleigh Chopper) the recommended lube for the job is “light machine oil“… IIRC 3-in-1 has some additives but as far as I can tell there’s nothing in there that’ll harm a Sturmey-Archer (just corrosion inhibitors and citronella).

- push the wheel forward when out of the frame.
- put the chain back on and set the wheel distance so that there’s enough slack.
- have a friend hold the frame and the rear wheel.
- mount up cleaner and use it.
Are Sturmey Archer hubs reliable?
The classic Sturmey-Archer AW hub is the most reliable gear-shifting mechanism ever made, and rarely needs anything more than a bit of medium-weight oil every so often. 95 percent of shifting problems on 3-speeds are related to the control cable or the shifter.
When was the Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub invented?

What does 3 speed mean on a bike?
The three-speed bicycle is a bicycle that uses internal hub gears at the rear wheel hub to provide three gear ratios. Three-speed hubs have been in use since the early 1900s. Though they are heavier than comparable derailleur systems, internal-gear hub systems generally last longer and require less maintenance.
How does a 3 speed internal hub work?
Three speed hubs use a planetary gear system to achieve a gear ratio between the sprocket and the wheel. In this gear system the sun gear is fixed in place while the planet carier is rotated. This causes the planet gears to rotate which in turn causes the ring gear to rotate. The rider selects a speed using a shifter.
