Old SORA compatibility with new Claris

Is Shimano Claris compatibility?
Yes, you can use any 8 or 9 speed rear derailleur (with the traditional cable pull ratio, but SRAM 1:1 does not matter here) with 8 speed shifters. The same for the front ones. That includes these two Claris generations. Your combination is compatible.
What is the difference between Shimano Claris in Shimano Sora?
The biggest difference, however, is that Shimano Sora is nine-speed rather than the eight-speed offered by Claris, meaning that you have an extra gear to call on, reducing the jumps between cassette sprockets.
Which is higher Claris or Sora?
The Sora groupset does indeed sit above Claris in the Shimano pantheon. Shimano carefully engineers each level to be incrementally better than the one below it, in terms of features, weight and quality of materials. You should be able to feel a difference between the two groupsets in terms of shifting.
Is Claris compatible with 105?
If the front and rear speed levels are the same, they are up and down compatible. DURA-ACE, ULTEGRA, and 105 parts are compatible with each other up and down the 2×11 speed range. SORA and CLARIS are not interchangeable because the number of steps is unique to each grade.
Can you mix Shimano groupsets?
It is possible to mix and match as long as you get components from the same generation. For example: 9000 Dura Ace, 6800 Ultegra, and 5800 105 are all cross compatible. Each have 11-speeds in the rear, use the same cable pull per shift and use the same front derailleur design.
Is Sora good enough?
The big differences between more expensive options and the Sora are the non-changing 9-speed (the number of gears available), and the additional weight compared to more premium versions. However, Sora maintains its reputation as a reliable groupset offering good performance.
Is Claris good enough?
Claris is a fine enough groupset especially since you’ll be building up a Wolverine soon. 8 speed is reliable and preferred by many commuters. I ride an 8 speed randoneuring bike with deore mechs now and honestly it’s quite adequate.
When did Shimano Claris come out?
2013
Components Series Bringing High Quality Road Bikes to Entry-Level Riders. Undergoing a full-model change from its predecessor 2300 series, SHIMANO CLARIS was released in 2013 as a components group for entry-level riders under a new name.
Is Shimano Claris 9 speed?
Shimano road bike groupsets: Claris
It’s an 8-speed groupset and is aimed at beginner and new cyclists, and so you have triple (53/39/30) and compact (50/34) chainset options, along with an 11-34 cassette.
Can you mix groupset components?
Indeed, it is now possible to mix and match 11-speed chains and cassettes from all three manufacturers with satisfactory results in most instances. Fussy riders and mechanics may notice a difference in the shift quality and/or some extra noise, however both are relatively subtle.
Can you mix and match bike components?
As a general rule of thumb, it’s best not to mix and match drivetrain components from different brands. While things such as cranks, chains and cassettes are mostly inter-compatible between brands, generally speaking, shifters and derailleurs aren’t.
Are all Shimano 10 speed components compatible?
The problem when looking at TIAGRA component compatibility is that 10-speeds are not officially compatible with each other, and with the 4600 and 4700 series components.

Are Shimano parts interchangeable?
Shimano’s Dura-Ace and Ultegra Di2 components are highly interchangeable provided they all bear the company’s e-tube technology (the one exception being the original Dura-Ace 7970 groupset, which uses a unique wiring harness).
Can I use a 105 cassette with Ultegra?
There’s no reason why you can’t use an Ultegra cassette with an otherwise 105 groupset, or vice versa. With both 105 and Ultegra, the largest sprocket you can officially use is a 34-tooth, although in truth you can go much larger than that; we have gear systems with 11-40 cassettes that work very happily.

Which is better Claris or 105?
105 is higher in Shimano’s road hierarchy as it’s designed for “enthusiasts” whereas Claris components are considered entry-level. Therefore, there is no doubt that Shimano 105 is the more sophisticated of the two. However, higher-end components are not the best choice for every project.
