Should you hold your stomach muscles in?

Since your core is the basis of almost every movement we make in our day to day lives, it is important to keep it strong. So how do you engage your core? Your abs should be tight and pulling in but you should be able to breathe and move normally. It is NOT sucking in your stomach and holding your breath.

Why should you hold your stomach in?

It might be something your mother drilled into you growing up: “Hold your stomach muscles in. It will tone your abs and support your back”. It’s also a common go-to exercise for personal trainers and physios. For years now we’ve seen how bracing your back doesn’t work.

How do you practice holding in your stomach?

In order to flatten your stomach, you want to to tilt your pelvis back. To practice this, lie on the floor and put your hand behind the small of your back. Tilt your pelvis back so that you are squishing your hand into the ground. Hold this for 5 seconds.

Sucking in can contribute to pelvic floor issues like incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Habitually contracting your upper abdominal muscles can exert excess force on the pelvic floor muscles, leaving them strained and overworked.

Does tying the stomach help reduce it?

There is no scientific evidence to prove that using a corset or tying a cloth around your stomach can get it back into shape. That said, tying a cloth around your tummy or using a corset is widely popular and many cultures across the world encourage this practice.

Does tightening stomach muscles help?

Strengthening abdominal muscles can help you look tighter and thinner. But spot exercises won’t banish belly fat. The real secret to losing belly fat is a balanced, calorie-controlled diet and an hour a day of moderate activity such as brisk walking.

What happens when you hold your stomach in?
