Does the size of weight plates matter?

By making them a slightly smaller diameter, when a loaded bar is dropped, only the heavier and more durable weights hit the floor. The smaller diameter weights don’t make contact and thus prevent damage to the plate.

Are kilo plates easier to lift?

For those that live in a country that uses the metric system (aka people outside the US), kilo plates are the easy choice. If you live in the US you’ll most likely only want to buy kg plates if you plan on lifting competitively. Otherwise, plates measured in lbs will be the way to go.

Does bar weight count in powerlifting?

The weight of the barbell is always counted, no matter whether it’s a 20kg Olympic or powerlifting barbell, a 23kg trap bar, a 7.5kg EZ bar, a 27kg safety squat bar or a 4.54kg standard bar. If you use competition locks, 2.5kg each, you count those too. If you lift it, it counts.

Why do some weight plates have smaller holes?

Standard plates are usually paired with adjustable dumbbells and Olympic plates with full-size barbells, although standard barbells and Olympic dumbbells exist. Weight plates may incorporate holes for ease of carrying (called “grip plates”) or be solid discs (especially those used for competition).

Why are CrossFit plates so big?

Bumper plates are weight plates made of high-density rubber. They are a standard diameter across all weights and are used in lifts (Olympic and CrossFit usually) where the loaded barbell is dropped to the floor. Their rubber construction protects the weights, the barbell, and the floor from damage.

Why is a plate 45 pounds?

But why do weight plates stop at 45 lbs. and not go right up to 50? It seems the main reason for this type of weight distribution is that the Olympic standard for the largest weight plate is actually 20 kilograms. This equals to 44.09 pounds, making a 45-pound Imperial weight plate the closest corresponding size.

Why are powerlifting plates so thin?

Calibrated plates are significantly thinner than non-calibrated cast iron plates. Much less storage space is needed and you can load more on the bar (up to 700 kilograms.) Very snug fit on 50 mm sleeves reduces rattling on the bar, and reduces opportunity for plates to slide around between reps.

Are all weight plate holes the same size?

The most obvious difference between Olympic weights and standard plates is hole size. Olympic plates have a 2 inch hole, while standard plates have a 1 inch hole for the barbell to pass through. Because of this displaced space, Olympic plates are slightly larger than standard plates of the same weight.

Are crumb bumper plates better?

Crumb bumper plates are made out of softer rubber compared to regular bumper plates. This means crumb plates are even more durable than regular bumpers and offer an amazing bounce.
