No. The only advantage of expensive chains within a specific brand is the minor reduction in weight. The ones with extra plating do look nicer and provide some corrosion resistance, but it takes almost no effort to keep your chain rust free.

Does it matter what bike chain I get?

Which brand of chain should you buy? For optimal performance, it’s recommended to match your drivetrain manufacturer (the most common are SRAM and Shimano) to the brand of chain. This isn’t vital though – as long as the chain is made for your number of gears, it should work.

How long does a chain last?

2,000 to 3,000 miles

Replacing your chain regularly can prolong the life of your drivetrain. Most mechanics agree that you should replace your chain about every 2,000 to 3,000 miles, depending on your riding style.

Is there a difference in bike chains?

Chains have become narrower to match, which limits their compatibility between drivetrains with different numbers of gears. Therefore, you can’t run a 12-speed chain with an 11-speed sprocket set, for example, and it means that if you’ve got an 11-speed drivetrain you’ll need an 11-speed chain.

How long should a cycle chain last?

How long do 10 speed chains last?

between 1,500 and 3,000 miles

Expect between 1,500 and 3,000 miles from a 10-speed chain. It helps to establish what counts as ‘worn out’. A chain is worn enough to affect transmission efficiency when it lengthens by 0.75% but has some life left if extended mileage is the aim, in which case it should ideally be replaced when it lengthens by 1%.

How long do O ring chains last?

If maintained regularly a decent quality motorcycle chain should give you 15,000 to 20,000 miles (24,000 – 32,000 km) of hassle free riding while high end Gold X or O-ring chains will last 20,000 to 30,000 miles (32,000 – 48,000 km).
