This isn’t a bodybuilding program, but one designed to increase strength by training in a relatively low rep range. Your goal is to increase the weight you lift by 5 pounds each workout for as long as you can. Note that the 5 sets does not include warm-up sets.

Is 5×5 good for powerlifting?

5 reps seems to be an ideal number for both building strength and for improving neuromuscular coordination (technique). 5 sets provides extra practice and increased volume over the traditional 3 sets. In short 5×5 is and likely always will be a solid way to train.

Is StrongLifts 5×5 good for advanced lifters?

The weights do go up very quickly (my top sets of five squats this round go 155->175->192.5->202.5) so it’s obviously not going to be the best choice for advanced lifters (despite the name). However, I would definitely recommend it from anyone hovering around a 1.5xBW squat, 1xBW bench and a 2xBW deadlift.

Will StrongLifts 5×5 build big arms?

StrongLifts 5×5 already works your arms. Pressing the bar on the Bench and Overhead Press works your triceps. Pulling the bar on the Barbell Row works your biceps. Gripping the bar hard on Deadlifts and Squats works your arms.

Is 5×5 deadlift too much?

Anyone with a big 5 rep max (5RM) would never, and won’t for long if they do, walk up and and rack on their 5RM weight and go to town for 5 sets. If they do, they most likely aren’t that strong, that’s not really their 5RM, or are going to get hurt soon. Remember, a 5RM means there’s no way you could do a 6th.
