Why do I still have a running cramp?
Dehydration, poor stretching and insufficient carbohydrate intake can cause severe muscle cramps in the legs and calves. Even seasoned runners who run too fast, too soon during a race are susceptible to muscle cramps. It’s a common reason why inexperienced runners fail to finish their marathon.
How long can a running cramp last?
Cramps usually only last for a short time – typically less than a minute. But sometimes the pain can last for up to 10 minutes. And your muscle can feel tender for up to 24 hours afterwards. The cramp may happen again if you carry on your exercising and don’t allow the muscle time to recover.
Is it OK to keep running with a cramp?
You may also need water, so it’s a good idea to stop running and slow down to a walking pace. Take that opportunity to rehydrate and give your muscles the recovery they need. If the leg or calf cramps become excruciating, stop the run completely and take a break to do light some light stretches.

Skeletal muscles usually cramp at short lengths, where the tension that can be exerted by muscle fibers is low. Since high tension is an important anabolic stimulus, it is questionable if cramps can induce hypertrophy and strength gains.
Does dehydration cause cramps running?
KD: In my experience, stomach cramping during runs is typically either caused by too much nutrition (i.e. gels, sports drinks) too quickly or dehydration (the runs). With that said, runners are able to train the stomach just like muscles.
Is it a cramp or a pulled muscle?
If immediate relief is felt, it’s likely just cramping. If the act of stretching seems to cause more pain and you cannot get a good stretch, it is more likely a strain where you have partially cause some micro-tears in the muscle, but the majority of the muscle fibers are still intact.
What happens if you push through a cramp?
If you run or ‘push through’ through this pain you’ll potentially pull more muscle fibres apart, which will result in a bigger injury with more pain and a longer recovery time. This is why it’s so important to know the difference in sensation between your muscles cramping and a strain.
Why does my calf seized up when I run?
The conventional wisdom about muscle cramps is well established. If you’re slogging through the final kilometres of a marathon and your calf or hamstring suddenly seizes up, it’s the result of a nutritional failure: you didn’t take in enough electrolytes to replace the salts lost in your sweat.
