If you are building to a 1 rep max you should only max out every 3-4 months. However, there are different ways to “max out”, each with their own recommendations. Maxing out, in any capacity, on a regular basis will often lead to injury and decreased performance.
Do I need to know my 1 rep max?
Not necessarily. While knowing 1RMs can be useful for intermediate and advanced lifters to provide accuracy for programming, beginners don’t necessarily need to know their true 1-rep max strength.
How often should you hit PRs?
You should always be striving to hit new PRs whenever you can, but, if your training is on point, those PRs won’t usually be all-out attempts. Conversely, with a good one-rep max attempt, you’ve got nothing left – it feels as though if you had put two more pounds on the bar, you would have missed the lift.
How much more should your 1 rep max be?
For hypertrophy (8 to 12 reps per set), your sweet spot is 80 to 67 percent of your 1RM. And if you want to target your endurance-oriented type I fibers, load up with no more than 65 percent of your 1RM so you can bang out at least 15 reps per set.

Should I Deload before maxing out?
You should also take a 4-7 day “deload” prior to your 1RM testing for best results. It’s also worth decreasing other high-intensity activities like hiking, biking in the days prior to your testing for the best results.
Is Deadlifting once a week enough?
Both beginner and advanced lifters will benefit from training deadlifts 1 to 3 times per week. There can be a case for deadlifting more frequently, for example, if you’ve hit a plateau in strength or want more technical practice, but you should manage the difficulty and volume of those workouts carefully.

I’ll start with the obvious: the best way to warm up for a max lift is to do the same exercise with submax weights. So while push-ups are a perfectly fine exercise to warm up your shoulder joints, if the goal is a PR on the bench press, it’s better to warm up for it with lighter-weight bench presses.
Is the 1RM test valid?
The 1RM test has good-to-excellent test–retest reliability. The reliability of the test seems to be high regardless of resistance training experience, number of familiarization sessions, exercise selection, part of the body assessed (upper vs. lower body), and sex or age of participants.
