How much water should be in a pressure tank?

(Remember, the rest of the space holds air). See the chart above. Generally speaking, most residential homes in CT have pumps that deliver between 5-10 gallons of water. So the tank “shell” size should be between 30-50 gallons.

Run the hose out of the house. Turn the boiler drain on and empty the tank. And once the tank is empty you can check the air charge. With with a handy tire gauge.

5 gpm (two fixtures running simultaneously at 2.5 gpm) is a good estimate of peak demand, for the typical household. Water wells that reliably yield 5 gpm should be able to meet peak and daily needs for most residences. Wells yielding less than 5 gpm, however, are sometimes the only water source available.
