If you call them 30minute, 45minute or 1hour SCBA’s, it is my opinion you are making a HUGE mistake by creating the mentality that “this should last an hour”. When in reality, a 4500psi or “45 minute” (as you call it) SCBA will last the average person 20 – 25 minutes on the fireground.

The Aluminum cylinder, which falls under the DOT 3AL has a 15 year warranty and use. However, that life can extend beyond the initial 15 years. To qualify for this, after the first 15 years, once it fails the first hydrostatic test, you must take it out of service.

Composite SCBA cylinders must be tested at a minimum of every 3 years. Cylinders constructed from aluminum or steel must be tested every 5 years. All composite SCBA cylinders have a maximum service life of 15 years, provided they are hydrostatically re-tested on a regular basis in accordance with DOT regulations.
