Composting worms can consume 25-33% of their own weight daily, according to conservative estimates. So using the most conservative estimate, you need 4 times more weight in worms than you create in food waste daily.
How much compost does a worm make?
Worms can eat their weight in soil each day. Over 1 million worms may be present in one acre of soil, and these worms can produce 700 pounds of castings each day. Two thousand red worms in a worm bin can produce 7 pounds of castings in one month. Ask children to estimate how much food waste they produce each day.
How much worms do I need for compost?
For beginners we recommend starting with 1 pound of worms for every 4 square feet of your worm bin’s top surface area. Experienced vermicomposters can start with more worms and we recommend 1 pound of worms for every 1 square foot of you worm composter’s top surface area.
Can you have too many worms in compost?
A breeding surge can result in the addition of hundreds of baby worms in a bin. Adults found at the top of the bin may just be trying to escape from overcrowding in the bin and given a little time the population will balance itself without any problems. Alternatively, the surplus worms can be removed to another bin.
Is it worth buying worms for compost?

The problem with excessive earthworm castings is that they are actually too full of nutrients. When there are too many earthworms in the soil that a lawn grows from, their castings will actually start to burn the lawn due to the overabundance of fertilizer.
Can worms survive in potting soil?
Because it is intended to drain quickly, potting soil is a poor choice for a worm bin. Worms must have some moisture, but not enough to pool in the bottom of the bin. Worms not kept moist have trouble burrowing and often fail to reproduce.
How deep should my worm bed be?
The container depth should be between eight and twelve inches. Bins need to be shallow because the worms feed in the top layers of the bedding. A bin that is too deep is not as efficient and could potentially become an odor problem. Worm boxes can be purchased or made.

Earthworms like moist soil. They can survive in dry soils but they are not active. However if the drought is severe, they will die. In dry conditions, they can burrow deep into the soil to 1 metre, tie themselves in a knot, secrete a coating of mucous about themselves which dries and helps prevent water loss.

If an earthworm is split in two, it will not become two new worms. The head of the worm may survive and regenerate its tail if the animal is cut behind the clitellum, according to The Washington Post.
Do earthworms prefer light or dark?

Why are my worms going to the bottom?
The worms are heading to the bottom as they are trying to get cool. Add some bedding to the top layer (damp newspaper, cardboard) to encourage the worms upwards.

Can you overfeed a worm farm?
