How long will a trolling motor run on a deep cycle battery?

7 min read

Asked by: Chad Thapa

So on a 120 amp hour AGM (deep cycle) battery, using only 50% of that (the safe discharge limit for deep cycle lead acid batteries), it will run for about 20 hours. On a 120AH lithium battery you could run it for about 36 hours as lithium batteries can be safely discharged 90% of their capacity.

How long will my deep cycle battery last on my trolling motor?

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) Batteries are a type of lead acid battery that are completely sealed, generally last longer on a charge and typically have a longer life-span. While a traditional deep cycle battery might last approximately 2-3 years, an AGM deep cycle battery can last up to three or four years.

How long will a 100Ah battery run a trolling motor?

How long can a 100Ah battery run a trolling motor? A 12 volt 100Ah lead acid deep-cycle battery will power a 30lbs thrust Minn Kota trolling motor on Speed 4 setting for about 4 hours.

How long will a 24 volt battery last on a trolling motor?

You will get a day at a time with a 24V trolling system, but it’s nice to be able to plug in at night and charge up both of thos batteries at the same time. I would go with 10 amps per bank at a minimum. My on-board is 15 amps per bank and I charge all the way up overnight (6 hours).

Can you use a deep cycle starting battery for trolling motor?

A starting battery should not be used for trolling motors or powering appliances. Marine Deep Cycle Batteries are designed to discharge slowly over a long period of time and to withstand several hundred charging and discharging cycles.

What size battery do I need for a 55 lb thrust trolling motor?

100-120 AH

Using a Newport Vessels 55lb thrust motor continuously for two hours at full speed would require a battery with a 100-120 AH rating.

How many amp hours does a trolling motor battery have?

Most trolling motor batteries fail due to lack of proper charging. Click here for more information on battery selection and power issues. We suggest selecting a 12 volt deep cycle marine battery with at least a 110 amp hour rating, usually a group 27 size battery.

How long will a 100Ah battery run an appliance that requires 3000w?

Table: Running times for various AC loads

100Ah deep-cycle lead-acid battery with AC loads with inverter – 50% recommended discharge
Load (watts) Run time (hours)
100 watts 5.16 hours
200 2.58
300 1.72

How long will a 100Ah deep-cycle battery last?

“How long will a 100Ah battery last?” A 100Ah battery can last anywhere from 120 hours (running a 10W appliance) to 36 minutes (running a 2,000W appliance).

How many solar panels do I need for a 100Ah battery?

A fully discharged 12V 100Ah auto battery will need 3 solar panels each rated at 100 watts to fully recharge in one day, assuming average 4 peak-sun-hours. A 100Ah lead-acid deep-cycle battery discharged to 50% of it’s capacity will need 2 solar panels each rated at 100 watts to fully recharge in one day.

Should you trickle charge a deep cycle battery?

Trickle chargers definitely work for marine batteries because they don’t generate excess heat. During a standard charge, the battery heats up. It’s certainly safe to touch, but these issues occur within the battery, including: Internal materials slowly break down.

How long will trolling motor run?

The larger the rating, the more power the battery can hold, and the longer it will be able to power a motor at a given speed. For example, a 100 amperage hour battery is one that would be able to supply 25 amps of power for 4 hours (25 amps * 4 hours = 100 amp hours) before running out of energy.

Is there a difference between deep cycle and marine battery?

Marine batteries may be starting batteries, dual-purpose batteries or deep cycle batteries. They are usually a hybrid of starting and deep cycle batteries, with lead sponge plates that are coarser and heavier than starting battery plates but not as thick as true deep cycle battery plates.

When should you use a deep cycle battery?

Deep cycle batteries provide sustained energy, making them ideal for certain applications that require more than a quick start.

Some of the most common uses for deep cycle batteries include:

  1. Marine applications.
  2. Recreational vehicles.
  3. Materials handling, including forklifts.
  4. Golf carts.
  5. Off-grid renewable energy.

Is a deep cycle battery better than a regular battery?

Unlike a traditional car battery, deep-cycle batteries provide a long, steady stream of power. It can provide a short burst of power, but nothing like a car battery. Deep cycle batteries are also lead-acid batteries but they are designed to be discharged and recharged regularly.

What is the best way to charge a deep cycle marine battery?

For lithium deep cycle batteries, we suggest Ionic single chargers and Ionic bank chargers. These chargers are for LiFePO4 marine batteries. They’re smart chargers. They charge at a steady rate, and they stop charging when the batteries reach their full voltage.

How often should you charge your trolling motor batteries?

Batteries that are left to sit with less than 12.4 volts are prone to the formation of lead sulfate inside the cells, which will severely impact their performance and lifespan. It’s a good idea to use a trickle charger during the offseason to keep power flowing through the battery, or to re-charge them every month.

How long will a deep cycle battery hold a charge?

The standard and most widely accepted rating period for deep cycle batteries is 20 hours. This means that the battery was discharged down to 10.5 volts over 20 hours while measuring the total amp hours it supplies.

Can you charge a deep cycle battery with a car alternator?

Most vehicle alternators will never properly and fully charge up a Deep Cycle battery so invest in a good charger or a solar arrangement with a charge controller/regulator with at least a three stage charging control (many chargers are now 6 or 7 stage affairs).

Does revving engine charge battery faster?

The battery will charge faster if you rev the engine faster. Why? Because the faster the crankshaft turns, the faster it turns the belt that runs the alternator. And the faster the alternator turns, the more electricity it produces to run all the electrical stuff in the car — and recharge the battery.

Will an outboard motor charge a deep cycle battery?

Trolling motor deep cycle batteries will not be charged properly by the outboard. Most of the amps from the engine alternator will be required to run the engine and recharge the starting battery.

Can you put a deep cycle battery in a truck?

If the marine battery is a 12-volt battery, then you can use it for your car. This will enable it to be both a starter and a deep cycle battery. The size of the marine battery will also be something else to consider.

Will a high output alternator damage a deep cycle battery?

That is, your alternator will only supply the amount of amperage a particular component demands—and no more. So high-output alternators will not harm your components or charging system, no matter how high you go with the amps.

What is the difference between marine cranking amps and cold cranking amps?

Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) is a test conducted at 0 F (-18 C) for 30 seconds without falling below 7.2v at the battery’s CCA rating. Marine Cranking Amps (MCA) is a test conducted at 32 F (0 C) for 30 seconds without falling below 7.2v at the battery’s MCA rating.

Can you charge a marine battery with a car charger?

Yes you can. A deep cycle battery is not much different from a regular battery except it is designed to give out a small amount of power over a long period where a regular battery is designed to give out a large amount of power over a short period even though both batteries can produce the same if roles are reversed.

How long can you leave a trickle charger on a marine battery?

With a fast charge, a high amount of heat is generated, which can destroy your battery by welding its internal plates together. To prevent the charger or battery from overheating, don’t leave the charger connected to the battery for more than 24 hours.

Can you charge a deep cycle battery while in use?

Yes, you can. However there are two basic requirements, at least for a lead-acid chemistry pack. 1) The charger must be able to directly supply the required load current AND any required charging current.
