Service that meets the Highest Dive Industry Standards. Your Scuba Tanks need to have a Visual Inspection, “VIP”, done annually. They are going to need a HYDRO test completed every 5 years.

How often do scuba tanks fail Hydro?

Generally, about 12% of tanks tested, fail the visual test – which reveals damage (both internally and externally) that exceeds the allowable limits. Very few tanks fail the hydrostatic test. It should be noted that most of the internal and external damage on a SCUBA tank is preventable by the user.

How many times can a scuba tank be hydro?

In the US, the DOT (Department of Transportation) controls scuba cylinders. While wrong, many dive shops agree that a properly cared for aluminum tank has a service life of about 20 years. In reality, aluminum tanks by engineering can withstand the stress of 100000 refills or 10000 hydrostatic tests.

Do scuba tanks expire?

We often take for granted that our cylinders are safe, and that dive staff has tested and properly cared for them. But if a cylinder “goes bad,” it can have life-changing (or even life-ending) consequences for the diver or whomever is filling it. Scuba cylinders leave the factory tested to strict engineering standards.

How much does it cost to Hydro a scuba tank?

Federal Law requires a new hydrostatic test every five years for most SCUBA tanks. AHS will provide this service for $55 per tank and it includes the test, a visual inspection, and an air fill. Hydro with a Nitrox fill is $62. Please note that additional charges may apply if the valve requires cleaning or rebuild.

How do you check the hydro date on a scuba tank?

The DOT requires hydrostatic tests for SCUBA tanks every five years. If you’re not sure when the last test was performed, check the outside of the cylinder. There, you’ll find the year of manufacture, which is your first hint. If this date was about five years ago, it’s time for the cylinder’s first hydro-test.

Are old scuba tanks good for anything?

Old tanks are not necessarily unusable as scuba equipment. If the tank’s hydrostatic test date is passed, send the tank in for testing. Steel tanks have a very long life and steel tanks from the 1950s can still be found in perfect working condition.

Should I keep air in my scuba cylinder?

Your scuba cylinder should always be stored with a minimum of 200 psi inside of it. If it is stored completely empty, the absence of pressure inside the cylinder can allow all sorts of things to enter into it. Most divers don’t think much in the way of their scuba cylinders.
