The Rohloff hub is notorious for producing noise in some of its gears, in particular, gear seven. The Pinion gearbox is not completely quiet – it still makes a slight whirring sound – but it’s certainly less pronounced, especially in the lower half of the gear range.

Are all Freehubs removable?

All moving parts are in the freehub body. Most rear hubs allow the freehub body to be removed. The body can then be flushed with solvent for cleaning, dried, lubricated with oil, and then reinstalled. Much of the process is similar to a hub overhaul.

Can you change freehub bodies?

You can either buy a new freehub body or if you’re lucky your local bike shop or bike recycling project may have a stash! Your replacement freehub body needs to have the same interface as your old one (meaning the same spline pattern) so it can fit onto your old hub.

How often should you repack hubs?

A standard like “change your oil every 3000 miles” doesn’t exist as far as I know, although here is a suggested one. I ride about 3,000-4,000 miles a year and my rule of thumb is to do the hubs every 300 – 500 miles or so, and the bottom bracket twice a year. Works out to a hub overhaul about every other month.

How often should I grease my hubs?

Standard tapered trailer wheel bearings are recommended to be re-packed with fresh bearing grease about every year or every 12,000 miles under normal use. In certain conditions this interval could be shorter, such as if you routinely tow the trailer under conditions of extreme heat or near its maximum load capacity.

The only real reason to apply grease to the freehub is as RustyIron mentioned, if there is creaking between the freehub and cassette interface. Personally I will very lightly grease a steel freehub, just enough to put a little shine on it. An aluminum freehub I’ll leave dry.

So, you don’t want to be pedaling with full force while you’re shifting, especially if you’re pedaling uphill. It may sound difficult or counter-intuitive at first, but you have to ease up on pedaling ever so slightly while you shift, while still keeping a nice, smooth pedal stroke.

A shifting chain while pedaling backwards may not indicate any problem at all. A derailleur is designed to only work in the forward pedaling motion. Once you start back spinning, the only chain alignment is based on the location of the chain as it come off the chain rings in front.
