Can you shift Rohloff while pedaling?

Here are just a few of the reasons Rohloff gets our vote as the gold standard of bicycle shifting systems: Ability to shift at all times, including when not pedaling.

How heavy is a Rohloff hub?

The weight of a fitted Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 CC OEM including twist shifter, shifter cables and cable guide is approx. 1820g. The comparison between the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and the derailleur system shows only a slight increase in weight.

How do you remove Rohloff wheels?

Quote from video: So put the wheel back in back onto the sprocket belt ring on these bikes. There's a torque arm just on the rear. On the left hand side position all in and that will locate straight into your wheel.

Can you shift Rohloff under load?

Rohloff’s are impossible to shift under load. You must unload the peddles for an instant which takes a little practice. It will become an automatic response, but in the beginning you will need to work on timing and muscle memory.

How long does a Rohloff hub last?

The Maintenance-Free Design (Almost)

Rohloff hubs should get you through a minimum of 100,000km riding before failure; many people have been known to cover far more.

Are Rohloff hubs noisy?

Drive Noise

The Rohloff hub is notorious for producing noise in some of its gears, in particular, gear seven. The Pinion gearbox is not completely quiet – it still makes a slight whirring sound – but it’s certainly less pronounced, especially in the lower half of the gear range.

Can you put a Rohloff hub on any bike?

The main reason I have refrained from compiling this list is that Rohloff hubs can be retrofitted to almost any bike – so any bike can technically be a Rohloff bike! There are many ways to tension the chain, manage the cables or secure the hub in any frame. That said, a dedicated Rohloff bike is very nice to have.

Why are Rohloff hubs so expensive?

However, the use of higher quality materials, more stringent manufacturing methods, and very tight tolerance requirements also account for a significant part of the premium you pay, and these factors are what make the Rohloff a superior product.

How many gears does the Rohloff hub have?

14 gears

With 14 gears, it has the same range as a 27 speed Shimano system (which has many doubles). The gears are changed with a grip shift, and different to its counterpart, the gears can be shifted at any time, even while standing. More advantages are: bigger range than a 27 gear system, stronger wheel, low maintainance.

How do you remove a Shimano Alfine wheel?

Quote from video: And do anti-clockwise both sides of the wheel. Until they're loose enough and the wheel will drop out of the frame just very carefully take the belt off the rear sprockets.

Are all Freehubs removable?

All moving parts are in the freehub body. Most rear hubs allow the freehub body to be removed. The body can then be flushed with solvent for cleaning, dried, lubricated with oil, and then reinstalled. Much of the process is similar to a hub overhaul.

Can you change freehub bodies?

You can either buy a new freehub body or if you’re lucky your local bike shop or bike recycling project may have a stash! Your replacement freehub body needs to have the same interface as your old one (meaning the same spline pattern) so it can fit onto your old hub.

How often should you repack hubs?

A standard like “change your oil every 3000 miles” doesn’t exist as far as I know, although here is a suggested one. I ride about 3,000-4,000 miles a year and my rule of thumb is to do the hubs every 300 – 500 miles or so, and the bottom bracket twice a year. Works out to a hub overhaul about every other month.

How often should I grease my hubs?

Standard tapered trailer wheel bearings are recommended to be re-packed with fresh bearing grease about every year or every 12,000 miles under normal use. In certain conditions this interval could be shorter, such as if you routinely tow the trailer under conditions of extreme heat or near its maximum load capacity.

Should you grease free hub?

The only real reason to apply grease to the freehub is as RustyIron mentioned, if there is creaking between the freehub and cassette interface. Personally I will very lightly grease a steel freehub, just enough to put a little shine on it. An aluminum freehub I’ll leave dry.

Can you shift while pedaling?

Pedal slightly easier while shifting

So, you don’t want to be pedaling with full force while you’re shifting, especially if you’re pedaling uphill. It may sound difficult or counter-intuitive at first, but you have to ease up on pedaling ever so slightly while you shift, while still keeping a nice, smooth pedal stroke.

Can you shift while pedaling backwards?

A shifting chain while pedaling backwards may not indicate any problem at all. A derailleur is designed to only work in the forward pedaling motion. Once you start back spinning, the only chain alignment is based on the location of the chain as it come off the chain rings in front.

Can you brake while shifting gears?

Quote from video: Car. One is to change down one gear at a time as you brake lifting the clutch up in between gear. Changes so that you have engine braking to the wheels as well as your foot brake braking the wheels.

Does speed shifting hurt the transmission?

The method of speed shifting might thrill you but it can result in some treacherous situations. Shifting your gears rapidly can cause considerable damage to the vehicle’s transmission. It can also lead to shutting off your car’s engine, if not executed properly.
