How does counterforce brace work?

4 min read

Asked by: Marisa Ostrowski

Counterforce braces help keep pressure off of the inflamed muscles by spreading tension to different parts of your arm. Instead of continually stressing the same forearm muscles and tendons when making certain movements, wearing a counterforce brace allows them to rest by re-distributing this pressure.

How does a counterforce work?

A counterforce brace is simply an elbow compression strap that wraps around the forearm and applies pressure just slightly below the site of your tennis/golf elbow pain. The extensor muscles in your forearm are attached at a small point on your upper arm bone (humerus) called the medial/lateral epicondyle.

What does the counterforce brace do for the patient with lateral epicondylitis?

Counterforce braces are used in an attempt to reduce the tension forces on the wrist extensor tendons, and these orthotics may be superior to lateral epicondyle bandages in reducing resting pain. The brace should be applied firmly approximately 10 cm distal to the elbow joint.

How tight should a counterforce brace be?

Enough so that when the patient squeezes. And makes a fist they feel pressure coming up through the brace. And if it's not tight enough they won't feel that pressure if it's too tight.

Where do you put a counterforce brace for tennis elbow?

The strap should be placed about an inch or 2 cm distal to the elbow crease. The strap should be placed over the muscle bulge during a muscle contraction of the wrist and finger extensors. If adding a cushioning inside the strap, it should be placed right over the muscle bulge, on the outside of the forearm.

How tight should an elbow brace be?

You should feel slight pressure, but it shouldn’t be overly tight. If you have any tingling, numbness, or discoloration in your hand or arm, then loosen the strap and retighten with less force.

Do tennis elbow braces really work?

In certain situations, bracing is simply not enough to treat the symptoms of tennis elbow. Bracing is considered a conservative treatment since it’s not very invasive. If a patient continues to experience pain and decreased elbow mobility after using a brace, other treatments should be considered.

Should I sleep with an arm brace on?

Use a brace while sleeping

By doing so, they help reduce pressure on the injured elbow tendons, and this can help reduce pain that’s keeping you up at night. These braces help keep the forearm muscles from contracting fully, and this can be helpful to your tennis elbow if you typically clench your fists at night.

How long does Golfers elbow take to heal?

The good news is that golfer’s elbow often heals on its own. Since it is a repetitive strain injury, the main factor affecting your healing is time away from the repetitive motion that caused the problem. How much time? Six weeks or so seems to be adequate.

How do you stretch lateral epicondylitis?

Straighten your arm with your palm facing down and bend your wrist so that your fingers point down. Gently pull your hand toward your body until you feel a stretch on the outside of your forearm. Hold the stretch for 15 seconds. Repeat 5 times, then perform this stretch on the other arm.

Should you wear a tennis elbow brace at night?

It should be worn at night and during the day when the pain is more bothersome. The second brace is a tennis-elbow strap (also known as a counterforce brace). This is recommended anytime you are lifting or performing activities such as working out, yardwork or grocery shopping.

How long does tennis elbow take to heal?

Tennis elbow will get better without treatment (known as a self-limiting condition). Tennis elbow usually lasts between 6 months and 2 years, with most people (90%) making a full recovery within a year. The most important thing to do is to rest your injured arm and stop doing the activity that caused the problem.

How does a tennis elbow brace work?

Tennis elbow strap

They work by compressing the upper forearm and absorbing the forces which are transmitted through the soft tissues to the point of pain on the outside of the elbow.

Should I wear elbow brace all day?

You use the elbow brace throughout the day, during your regular activities. Use it for a couple of weeks to see if you have an improvement in your symptoms. If it does help then that may be all you need to do; in addition to maybe taking an anti-inflammatory.

Why does tennis elbow hurt more at night?

Tennis elbow symptoms are reportedly most severe in the morning, which prompted a search for a pathological process while asleep. A “pathological sleep position” was hypothesized that repetitively aggravates an elbow lesion if the arm is overhead and pressure is on the lateral elbow.
